Knarls
Chapter 2
The life of a knarl is usually a mundane one, wandering around the forests of Northern Europe and America. If you don’t know, a knarl is a magical creature much like a hedgehog. The only difference is, when one sets out food, a hedgehog happily eats it. A knarl, on the other hand, will suspect trickery and believe someone is trying to trap it, so it will retaliate by ruining gardens, etc. I myself owned a little knarl, Pandora. She wandered off one day, and was found by a little muggle girl named Anna. Anna, believing that she had, in fact found a hedgehog, begged her parents to let her keep the knarl. They obliged to the girl’s request, not knowing what they had gotten themselves into. Obviously I had no idea about these events as they were happening. Before a memory charm was cast upon them, I got to speak with Anna and her parents. My findings are compiled into this short account.
The first several days with Halo (as Anna had named the knarl), were as Mrs. Clarence Chesterfield, Anna’s mother, stated “a monstrosity.” According to the family, they brought Halo into the home and tried to place her into an old rabbit cage they had. Being very afraid of captivity, Halo clawed, bit, and scratched herself away from the terrifying site. After about a half an hour, the family gave up and let it roam free. At this point, if I was a muggle, I would have given up entirely. Was it really worth all that trouble to have a pet? The next thing the Chesterfields attempted was feeding. Anna laid down a bowl of hedgehog food they had bought from the local pet store. Several hours later, Mr. Robert Chesterfield decided to mow the lawn. Stepping outside, he held a gaping mouth with horror. “My garden! It was a mess! Everywhere – from the destroyed flowers on the ground to the dilapidated ivy on the side of the house.” he stated. Apparently, the hardest part was deciding who destroyed the backyard. Certainty not Halo, she was much too small. The parents questioned Anna, but no matter how hard they tried, she didn’t confess to the knarl’s crime.
After learning Halo’s dislikes, namely captivity and food being set out, the Chesterfields started to grow on Halp. They let her walk around the house and yard, wherever and whenever she wanted. Also, since a knarl could hunt for itself, the Chesterfields did not supply Halo with any food at all. It is still a mystery to them how she stayed alive, “Hedgehogs cannot hunt for food!” Clarence exclaimed. About a year and a half passed by, and the Chesterfields still owned the strange hedgehog. It was only until I came into their town did anything change. I immediately recognized the knarl, or, rather it recognized me. I was strolling through town and it started clawing at my ankles excitedly. The Chesterfields ran up behind it and apologized profusely. I said it wasn’t a problem, but that that hedgehog was mine. Confused, they invited me to dinner at a local restaurant with them and we discussed everything. (This is when we had the interview in which I got my information.)
I really got to know these people well, and was sad when I had to put a memory spell upon them and took back Halo/Pandora. It was very hard for me to do something like this – it was so cruel. Magical law does state muggles should not own a magical creature, after all. I did manage to supply the family with a real hedgehog before I left. They’ll never know the difference. I hope you do understand the significance of this story – this is the first reported instance of a knarl and muggle bond ever being formed!
