Chapter 1
I had a friend and his name was Fred. My kids don’t know him as anything other than Uncle Fred. He was one of my best friends and as I am in the midst of telling you about so many people, I want to tell you about him. You can learn a lot about him from most of what I write including the Loo/Gred/Forge selection. So, Fred & George were identical twin brothers, in the year above me. They were born on the 1st April 1978 and sorted into Gryffindor.
At the time I had already heard about them from their brothers Charlie, Bill and Percy but I met them on their birthday in 1990, just before I started school. We formed a close bond over the six years spent at Hogwarts together. He was incredibly funny, always up for a laugh, brilliant at potions although my uncle didn’t want to admit it. Had a great imagination. I always thought of him as the slightly crazier twin. Whereas George was the more sensible one (if there is such a thing).
Both Fred and George managed to create a business called Weasley’s Wizarding Wheezes which they had started at school and were supposed to continue with. They continued with Owl Ordering services whilst problems were persistent.
He was a member of Dumbledore’s Army and the Order of the Phoenix. In short, he would have done anything to help you. Because he always stood by a mate in need. Especially if he could get a laugh out of it. He used to sit with me in the common room, he and George would take it in turns to lie next to me. He tried to make me feel better when Cedric died and tried to cheer me up. He was there when my uncle died and even though the words may be hazy, he covered my screams and we flew back to the broken window on the 7th floor. On the 2nd May 1998 we lost Fred. Or at least that’s what it said on the report. It’s all too much of a blur to give too much detail but he died saving his family. That’s what I heard.
I just want you all to know what a good person he was. How he liked doing astronomy (mainly because it gave him a reason to be up late and could tell you all sorts of fascinating pieces of useless information that he had picked up along the way.
Did you know… Saturn’s rings used to be called ears?
Did you know… Horklumps are nocturnal?
Did you know… When you look at something long enough it appears to go backwards!
So that’s Fred. I can’t put anything by him here because well, he’s not here but I suppose I can just say that he’s well remembered, missed and even has several people named after him.
