Lesson 4: Words And Their Power
Chapter 4
~The development of language is the reason for the rise of coordinated human thought.
~LANGUAGE: System of words or signs that people use to express their thoughts and and ideas.
~Spoken form is the fastest form of communication.
~The written languages survive for long.
~SCRIPTS: Written Systems of Symbols. It takes two forms:
-Single, complex symbols which represent words, such as cuneiform and hieroglyphs.
-Alphabets organized into words.
Alphabets
~PHOENICIAN ALPHABETS: Ancient form (1050 B.C.E.), No symbols for vowels.
~GREEK, LATIN and ENGLISH ALPHABETS: Contains vowels, Minimal changes to Phoenician Alphabets (shape and pronunciation has changed).
Incantations
~One or two words long.
~Mostly has Latin (one of the oldest known languages) origins and originate within Europe (descend from Latin).
~The incantation of Hover Charm "Levioso", which allows us to lift things has it's Latin root, the word "levis", which means "light of weight."
~Requires precise pronunciation. (Causes minor mishaps to explosions)
The Fire-Making Charm
~It's incantation "Incendio" means fire in Latin.
~One of the oldest-known spells.
Incantation: Incendio (‘in-SEN-dee-oh’)
Wand Movement: Curved flick up and down (as a flame)
Willpower: Low to very high depending on the distance of the target and the difficulty of igniting the target.
Concentration: Less needed for a simple light, more needed for a continuous stream of fire. On the target to be ignited.
~Should be practiced within a well-ventilated area. (To avoid catching fire).
~Can cause damage even when successfully cast! If backfired, clothes may catch fire.
~Difficult to target someone or something on the move.
The Locomotion Charm
~Object it affects appears to "fly," in reality it is simply hovering a few inches above the ground.
~Allows a minimal amount of vertical movement
~To move the target from one place to another.
~Requires constant attention and concentration.
Incantation: Locomotor (‘LOH-koh-moh-tor’)
Wand Movement: Full circle with an upward flick toward the target at the end, then pointed where the object should go.
Willpower: Moderate to very high, depending on the distance and weight of the object.
Concentration: Minimal concentration should be maintained on the target object.
~Combination of two words from ancient Latin.
-"Loco" means place or location'
-"motor" means to move.
-Taken together it means "move to a place".
~Useful to specify the target of the spell verbally (Locomotor Trunk).
