Chapter 4
When I awoke the next morning to get ready for the photo shoot, I found the others already awake. The second I walked into the kitchen area, they got silent, as everyone did when the person they were talking about got near them.
"That was too obvious," I said.
"Can you please just tell us what we want to know?" asked Nick.
"I can't. You're better off not knowing."
"Could it really be that bad?"
"You can't even-"
I doubled over, clutching my stomach. I grabbed the counter to keep my balance.
"You okay?" Dien asked, sounding worried as she came over to me.
"Yeah," I answered, straightening up as the pain disappeared just as suddenly. "I guess I slept wrong or something."
"I've never heard of your stomach hurting from doing that," Cameron said, one eyebrow raised.
"Guess I sleep weird."
"Your family sleep weird?"
"I don't want to talk about them."
"Just tell us if you have any siblings."
"No. My family is something you'd wish never to know about."
"We wish to know though," Zeke stated.
"You don't know what you're asking."
"How bad is your family?"
"If you weren't there, you wouldn't believe any of it."
"Please, Jakob," said Nick. "We've only got one more week of interviews and photo shoots until we're finally done. When it's all over, can we meet your family?"
"Meeting them is the last thing I will let you do. I wouldn't wish that on anyone."
"So just tell us about them."
"Actually, first, I'd like to know who this kid is," Cameron interrupted, motioning to the computer screen. "I think he does know you, Jakob."
"Name?" I asked.
"The username is INWITHBW. Oh, but there's a picture."
"Come on, everyone!" Mitchel called. "We're here!"
"Coming!" I replied, then went over and closed the laptop.
"What the hell?" Cameron shouted, standing up.
"We gotta go."
"You could have given me a second, or a warning!"
"I knew you'd disagree. Now come on."
Cameron glared at me but followed, Zeke, Nick, and Dien right behind him.
**********************************************
The week passed slowly, but mostly because it was so repetitive. For some reason, interviewers weren't very creative with their questions, they all asked the same things. How could celebrities live like this? People always complained their lives were dull, but they didn't know boring until they had to be interviewed.
I tried to keep Cameron away from any computer or the week because he was the one that was the most curious about the INWITHBW kid. If any of the others got on the computer, I'd glance to see what they were doing. If they went to the band site, I'd come up with something to get them away from the computer.
*******************************
"No, you know what? I'm done," Cameron said on one of the last days of the tour. "Sit down, Jakob."
"Why?" I asked.
"SIT!"
I was a little afraid because none of us had ever seen Cameron lose his temper. Nick had paused halfway through flipping a page in his book, Dien grew silent on the phone, and Zeke stopped while in the middle of a fight he was in on a video game, his character now being beaten badly.
Falling back onto the couch beside Nick, I looked up at Cameron, curious as to his mood.
"You're going to tell us what's up with this kid!" he shouted, pointing back at the computer I had just tried to get him away from. "And your family!"
"Calm down, dude," Zeke said.
"No! It's totally obvious he knows who that kid is and he keeps dragging us away from the computer. Think back, when was the last time any of you spent more than a second on the band site before Jakob asked you to do something that got you away from the screen?"
"It's not that big of a deal."
"What about his family!? We all want to know about them. Maybe this kid has the answers and that's why he's keeping us away from him."
"You don't-" I started.
"The fuck we don't! How can we call ourselves friends when you won't even tell us where you come from?"
When he put it that way, I had to admit, he had a point. A good one. I let out a deep breath and stood up. "Before you ;earn anything about my family, I have to do something first. But I promise you'll learn everything," I told him.
Cameron crossed his arms and narrowed his eyes. "What do you need to do?"
"Get something."
"Like what?"
"I already promised to let all of you now everything you want to about my family."
"Fine, make it fast."
With a nod, I walked around Cameron cautiously and went to get my laptop. Cameron sat down on the couch and watched me as I took a seat on my bunk.
"Have you ever seen him like that?" Dien whispered, sitting beside me, having ended her conversation on the phone while Cameron and I had been talking.
"No, and it freaked me out," I replied in just as low a voice.
"Are you going to keep your promise?"
"Yes, because I never want to see Cameron like that again."
I booked five tickets to Arizona from New York. We'd be leaving the following morning.
"Done?" Cameron inquired, raising an eyebrow as I came out to where and the others were, Dien following.
"Yes," I responded.
"Than get to it! Tell us everything."
"I'm not going to tell you-"
"You-"
I held up my hand. "I didn't finish. I'm not going to tell you, I'm going to show you. I just booked five tickets to Arizona so that you can all meet my family."
"Meet?"
"You're right, we're friends and you should all know everything. Rather than telling you and perhaps having you think I'm leaving things out, you'll be getting to form your own opinions from personal experience."
"Seriously!?"
"Be ready to leave at nine tomorrow morning."
