Fifteen years ago, a civil war took place in Alera. The Nationalists supported the royal family’s complete control while the Democrats believed the royal family shouldn’t have any power. The war cost the lives of many of the people and royal family, and by the time a compromise was agreed upon, most of the royal family was dead and a retired queen had to take the throne again temporarily. She died three years before the next in line, Olivia Alera, was eligible to become queen, but since she had no choice she was crowned. Since she was only fifteen, she was quickly overwhelmed and after discovering the corruption in her family she abandoned the throne, leaving the realm in chaos. In that time the economy crashed and a famine gripped the country, in addition to a volcanic explosion that shook the realm. After four years, she had no choice but to return, as she was of age and had a duty to return. She was obviously hated for abandoning the realm, but public approval went up after she took care of the aftermath of the volcanic explosion and helped ease the famine.

Despite this, the realm is still relatively poor and is rebuilding from its very rocky history.
