Sparking The Skrewt

Chapter 2

Sparking the Skrewt

One spring afternoon Luke had gone for a stroll in the grounds during his back-to-back free period. He had just finished scalding his hand in the potions lab and wasn't entirely too mindful of where he was walking, as he had just tripped over a rogue blast-ended skrewt that had escaped the pin over by the game keeper's hut. Being connected to animals as he was he apologized to the skrewt and fished out some crackers in his school bag he had saved from lunch to give it as an offering. The skrewt had accepted and was nibbling the crackers as Luke had made his way onward toward the Black Lake; he had a favorite sitting spot by the lake where he could see ever so faintly the upper lights from his common room beneath the water, and every once in a while he would notice the giant squid out of the corner of his eye as a tentacle had splashed down in the distance. He had pulled out his notebook for his upcoming Charms class in another hour and half and began to review his notes from the other day for the quiz over flight and locomotion charms when he noticed a little side note he scribbled in the margin about a minor healing charm that his older brother, Mike had given him. Luke had never tried it out so he figured now would be a good opportunity on his lobster-red left hand. Meanwhile he was digging in his robes for his wand, the skrewt he had tripped over was making its way toward him. He found his wand- Ebony with a lovely Cherry handle, reasonably pliant and a core of mermaid scale. He muttered the incantation and flicked his wand at his other hand. A soothing blue light had taken over his hand and he felt the pain subside when all at once the back of his head was burning in excruciating pain. Luke jumped and spun around to find the blast-ended skrewt aiming its rear end at him with burning hot gold sparks and fluids flying toward him. He recalled in an instant the spark spell he learned last month in Defense Against the Dark Arts class, Verdimilious,  so he brandished his wand at the skrewt threateningly as he skirted around just outside of the range of its sparks and fluids, which now had burnt the back of his head and made it smell awful. The skrewt lunged at him and he cast the spell. He jabbed his wand nearly inches from its face and shouted "Verdimilious!" and right then and there a great many emerald sparks had flown into its face. Sounds of popping, crackling filled the air as did the feeling of electrically charged air molecules. The skrewt had let out an ear-shattering screech and hurried away back towards the pin with the other skrewts. Nearly thirty minutes till Charms class starts, he clears his mind and attempts his brother's healing charm again on his head this time and once the light faded away and the stench had subsided he ran back up to the castle and bolted up the staircases to the charms classroom. Only one minute late, but the professor didn't seem to notice. As the professor stood up infront of the class with a stack of parchments and began going over the rules and guidelines for the test Luke had whipped out his notebook and recorded his experience using both spells. He'll be sure to testify the spell in Defense Against the Dark Arts class next time and pray that the gamekeeper never finds out he blasted his skrewt.
