Jumping Spiders (Salticidae)
Chapter 7
Jumping spiders are a group of spiders that constitute the family Salticidae. As of 2019, this family contained over 600 described genera and over 6000 described species, making it the largest family of spiders at 13% of all species. First of all, jumping spiders are friendly enough to catch. You can coax one out of a shrub or somewhere else and put it in your hand or a jar. As long as you handle them with care, you get to enjoy the company of this cute spider. You can even keep it in a container where it can jump around freely, like a terrarium. Jumping spiders in my opinion are the cutest of all spiders. Recent study finds that arachnids demonstrate "genuine cognition." Although jumping spiders have a brain the size of a poppy seed, they are actually quite smart. Portia fimbriata, a type of jumping spider, has demonstrated that they are able to sneak up on prey spiders, and even find hidden prey by visualizing its location and planning paths to get to it. Portia fimbriata, known as the Fringed Jumping Spider or often just as Portia is renowned as the world's most intelligent spider. It is a spider hunter which modifies its hunting strategies and learns from situations as it encounters them.
