Hammock spiders (Pityohyphantes costatus)
Chapter 5
This small spider – less than 1/2 inch in body-length – spins a hammock under which it waits for prey and also seeks protection. This species is difficult to identify from similar spiders of the same genus. It's hammock is a convex, flat, horizontal web with no circular pattern whatsoever. The hammock spider is a species of sheetweb spider in the family Linyphiidae. They make semi permanent webs of horizontal silk sheets supported by several additional lines.
