Slug Club

Chapter 1
Miss Louisa Snap. No, I don’t mean the game. In my 7th Year of Hogwarts Professor Horace Slughorn took over the Potions department. Although he had one downfall in the fact that he frequently called me Miss Snap, of which he delighted to tell everyone was a name he hadn’t come across before, and enjoyed coming up with cracking jokes. But as you do, you take it, smile and say “Yes Sir”.

The way I think it had all happened was because he had not been wearing his glasses when reading my notes from the previous year. Uncle’s handwriting was quite elegant and flourished so he possibly didn’t notice. And nobody ever attempted to correct him. I certainly, felt that it was not my place. Life had a stiff sense at that time.

It wasn’t until a SlugClub Dinner Party when I realised, he really had no idea what my name was. He went round each person in turn, asking what their parents did or introducing them proudly. It seemed he had now “collected us”. I was invited, not only as Head Girl but because I was good at Potions. In fact, I am really happy that he got me so wrong because it proved to people that I did things on my own merit not because I was a Snape.

The truth came out at that same Dinner Party though, because as he got to me it was.

“So, Snap. What about you? Your parents must be proud you are Head Girl! What do they do?”

It was one of THE MOST awkward times of my life trying not to look at Harry, Hermione and Ginny. It wasn’t as though I could come out with “my mother is dead and my father is aspiring to rule the world and kill Harry”. Luckily it was the shortest moment because Marcus Belby, a Ravenclaw in my year, who was sitting across from me almost choked on his drink, spat it half-way across the table and roared with laughter. Evidently, he had never heard Slughorn call me Snap.

“She ‘aint Snap Professor. She’s a Snape. Like Professor Snape.”

I’m not sure what to make of his face it was somewhere between distain and disgust. As though trying to fit a very difficult jigsaw back together.

“Really? A relation of Professor Snape?” his voice trembled slightly, “hmm…a family talent then”

I’m not sure how he felt about it, not sure how much he was aware of at the time. I understand that my mother, uncle and father all were in the SlugClub so I feel as though I joined them. In some small way.
