Chapter 1
Long ago I realised the importance of being branded, of being left with a mark. The mark of a name that in some eyes shows so much more. My father was born: TOM MARVOLO RIDDLE. It is the first and last name of his muggle father and the name of his magical grandfather.

When he was at school close friends would call him VOLDEMORT which he made as a nickname out of his own name. It means stealer of death.

Death Eaters, including my uncle would be nervous of calling my father anything other THE DARK LORD and address him as MY LORD. Even when not to his face.

Others for a long time would not even chance speaking his name. He was HE-WHO-MUST-NOT-BE-NAMED or YOU-KNOW-WHO. In all cases this was ridiculous fear of a name? It simply increases fear of the thing itself. I rarely called him anything. I gave no title to him. By the time I knew him he was intent on revenge. I never called him dad or daddy. I knew my place.

When I started at Hogwarts, I was named as LOUISA SNAPE. There was no sign of Riddle in my name and no questions asked. I have never been called Sarah, it very rarely gets mentioned, unless looking through official documents.

My nickname by close friends and family has always been LOU. Bellatrix Lestrange used to call me THE UNTOUCHABLE ONE but only so I could hear her.

If you have a relative that is a teacher you may well understand how my uncle wanted me to call him PROFESSOR SNAPE or SIR, just like any other student when we were at school but when we were home, I called him UNCLE.
To some it is important what they are called. To me it doesn’t matter, it is just a form of recognition, to me it is always just a name. What is important is how I feel about you.
