Chapter 5
Even though it was the wee hours of the morning, Mychel was still in the garage working on the car. Most of the time, he would be done by now, but he was buying his time, waiting for Jaykob to appear, fresh from his travels.
The door leading to the sideyard opened and Nathin walked into the garage. When he saw Mychel, he stopped, as id Mychel's presence had frightened him.
"What are you doing up?" Nathin inquired.
Setting down his tool, he picked up a rag and began wiping the grease from his hands as he said, "I could ask you the same question."
"Just couldn't sleep, so I decided to try and walk off my restlessness."
Mychel nodded. "Hand me that ratchet, would ya?"
Nathin grabbed it from the tool box and tossed it over. Mychel caught it without breaking eye contact with his brother. He walked towards Nathin and reached forward. Nathin ducked and spun away, towards the door as Mychel's hand closed around the soda can that had been sitting on the shelf over Nathin's shoulder.
"Well, 'night," Nathin said, turning and walking into the house, passing Jaykob.
"You alright?" Jaykob asked, looking at Mychel's face.
Mychel shook his head, coming out of his thoughts. "What?"
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine." Mychel looked at Jaykob and smiled a little before letting it fall and putting his eyes back on the door Nathin had just disappeared through. "It's just... I think Nathin is hiding something."
"Why?"
"He tossed me the ratchet."
Jaykob shrugged. "We both do stuff like that to you because of what you can do."
"Yeah, I know. But when I reached out, he ducked and moved away like he thought I was going to hurt him. I did it to test his reaction and he did exactly what I hoped he wouldn't do."
"He's always like that. Always has been."
Mychel turned back to the door Nathin had left through, falling back into his thoughts.
"Listen," Jaykob said, clapping a hand on Mychel's shoulder, causing him to return to reality again. "I know you're up late to hear my story about Elizabeth, you always are, but I am super tired."
"Yeah, of course. Go up to bed and you can tell me all about it later. And I want details."
"Sure, sure." Jaykob rolled his eyes and headed into the house.
Mychel stood there for a few more minutes, thinking. He set the tool and his soda down and followed behind Jaykob. Though rather than going to his room to get some sleep, Mychel went to the attic. Boxes upon dust covered boxes filled the attic, but they were all labeled, so it was easy to find the old photo albums. Grabbing them, Mychel sat down and flipped through them with the aid of the attic light.
There were tons of pictures of the Fox and Blood triplets all together in the top albums of the first box. Mychel assumed that the further down in the box the album was, the further back in time it went. He took out the third from the bottom and opened it up.
All of the pictures that featured all three brothers went along with what Jaykob had said, Nathin always avoided Mychel's touch. Every photo Mychel saw showed Nathin either leaning away from him, or standing on the other side of the picture. There were a few photos where Nathin was beside Mychel, but they stopped after the triplets celebrated their tenth birthday.
