Before An Adventure

Chapter 5

I
lay my head, filled with so many painstaking thoughts, against my
pillow. My
arms
lay by my side as I stare at my boring and dull ceiling. My head
starts
spinning.
Questions pop in my head like bullets. Who
is she? Why is she really here?
Why me? Can I trust her? Should I
tell her? What should I do?
They
keep running
through
my head as I began to wake from my memories. It was too much.

The
alarm clock beeped 5:00 loudly in my ear. I sat up; my hair was a
porcupine as
usual.
Turned my fuzzy blue alarm clock off and placed my feet down on
the
floor,
one by one. I slowly got up and sleepily went downstairs. The
kitchen
was
infused with the smell of vanilla and bacon. That only meant one
thing,
today
was Sunday, and every Sunday my Aunt makes vanilla pancakes and
bacon
because
I have to go to Mrs. Franey’s for our morning session. My mouth
watered
and
pulled out my chair and sat down with excitement.

“We
will
only have a 45 minute session today because our train leaves at 6:30
so we
have
to leave her place at 6:00. Hurry and eat your breakfast because we
have to
be
there at 5:15.” Emma said carrying my plate toward me. My eyes
widen and my
tongue
sticks out as I grab a knife and fork. She sees me as I look
ridiculous
and
rolls her eyes before she places the plate before me.
I
am about to pounce the deliciousness that was placed before me, when
a
thought
pops in my head.

“Wait
what?” I say abruptly and make my aunt turn suddenly.

“Train?”I
ask slowly, raising an eyebrow.

“Yes
train. We are going to Washington, D.C. to visit your grandparents.
It is their
birthday
tomorrow so we want to surprise them today. Your sister will be
there
too.”
She replies.

“How
come I wasn’t told?” I ask very offended. I knew my grandma’s
birthday was
tomorrow
and I was going to call at an appropriate time but going to visit
them
I
had not expect. I am happy I get to see them but it’s still
a
surprise.

“You’re
being told now.” She says sharply, as she turns around smirking. I
roll my eyes
and
go up the flight upstairs and start packing for the long day trip
waiting
ahead
for me.

“Let’s
go or well be late for your appointment!” My aunt yells at the top
of her loud
voice,
from the bottom of the stairs. I groan and go to the car.

I
sat
down the orange, fluffy beanbag that lies in the middle of Mrs.
Franny’s
office.
The bright sky blue rug was at my feet and her brown leather couch
was
at
my right. She sat down with a clipboard in her head and a pen in her
left ear.

“Hello
sapphire”
She tells me.

“Let’s
start with what’s your week been like?” she asks me.

“It’s
been good, same as every week.” I say emotionless because that’s
what I say
every
week. She sensed that I didn’t want to go through the same thing
as
before
so she said something that surprised me.

“Why
do you hide it?” She says this while looking at me. No, it felt
more than that.
It
was like she was looking at my soul. I was definitely not letting her
look. I
looked
away. She and flora both make me feel so comfortable about talking
about
it.
Mrs. Franey doesn’t know who I really was. I felt like I needed to
tell
her.
All of a sudden my phone rang. It was Emma. I declined. Mrs. Franey
looked
at
me like she was observing me, studying me, trying to understand me. I
look
at
her.

“I
feel insecure sometimes.” I pause and take a breath, “I um have
three friends. I
have
a best friend Flora.” I stop for a second to look at her and she
flinches
microscopically
at that name. I continued while still looking for her, “Then
there
are my two other friends. When I’m around them I feel safe,
comfortable,
and
normal.” She looks at me stranger even more.

“Normal?
Why wouldn’t you feel normal?” She interrupts. I start to sweat a
little. I
feel
my heart rate increase. I began to panic ever so slightly.

“People
at school are always bullying me, calling me names. They call me a
weirdo, a
freak,
a creep…” I stop and look away. There was a loud banging at the
door
that
gave a startle.

“SAPPHIRE,
come on or we will be late!” I hear my Aunts voice from the other
side. Thank
goodness,
I was saved.

“I am
sorry Mrs. Franey, I forgot that we had to cut the session by 15
minutes
because
I am going to visit my Gran-gran.” I say before I rush out the
door.
