Why these two breeds? Well if you have read my book “Patronus” you may know that my Patronus is a Granian. They are a breed of winged horse that are known for their speed and are used in winged horse racing. They are grey in colour and have feathers on their wings. It is uncommon, but some people so own them as pets. For this reason, I decided to compare and write about another winged horse that people often compare my patronus to. A Thestral.

Thestrals are a rare breed of winged horse, amongst the rarest there is. They are very gentle with a skeletal appearance and are jet black in colour. Their wings do not have feathers and look similar to bat wings as they seem to frail and skin-like. They are very intelligent and great navigators, which is why they are often used for transport.
When some people think of Thestrals they think of death as they can only be seen by those that have witnessed it. I have always been able to see Thestrals so I assume that I saw more than I realise about my mother’s death, when I was a child.

People that cannot see Thestrals track them down by their poo. Yes, you can see it. The food they eat looks like it vanishes and, because of their diet their manure appears bright red, making it easy to spot. They are rated XXXX rating by the Ministry of Magic simply because they require specialist knowledge. They say they are dangerous because they have eaten human fingers but that is just a scared horse that you can’t see. As long as you are cautious around them it should be fine.

Carrots are a favourite food and chocolate. Just don’t give them too much.
