Peeves The Polergeist

Here’s more on our troublemaking, mischievous Peeves the Poltergeist!

The name ‘poltergeist’ has German origins, and it roughly translates to ‘noisy ghost’, although it is not, technically, a ghost at all. The poltergeist is an invisible being that moves objects, slams doors, and creates other audible, kinetic disturbances. It’s been reported in many cultures and there’s a strong association with the places where young people, especially teens/adolescents, are living. Explanations for the phenomenon vary all from supernatural to scientific.

It was unavoidable that in a building full of teenage witches and wizards (Hogwarts), a poltergeist would be generated. It was also to be expected that such a poltergeist would be noisier, more destructive, and harder to expel than those that occasionally visit Muggle houses.

Sure enough, Peeves is the most famously mischievous and troublesome poltergeist in British history. Unlike the large majority of his colleagues, Peeves has a physical form, though he is able to become invisible when he wants to. His looks reflect his personality, which those who know him would agree is a blend of humour and malice.

Peeves was well-named, because he has been a pet peeve of every Hogwarts caretaker from Hankerton Humble (appointed by the four founders) and onwards. Even though many students and even teachers have a somewhat perverse fondness for Peeves (he undoubtedly adds a certain zest to school life), he is incurably disruptive, and it usually falls to the caretaker to clean up his many deliberate messes such as vases smashed, potions upended, bookcases toppled, etc. Those with weak nerves disapprove of Peeves’ fondness for suddenly materialising an inch from the end of their noses, hiding in suits of armour or dropping solid objects on their heads as they walk between classes.

Several coordinated efforts to remove Peeves from the castle have resulted in failure. The last and most disastrous attempt was made in 1876 by the caretaker Rancorous Carpe, who made an elaborate trap, baited with an assortment of weapons he believed would be irresistible to Peeves, and a large enchanted bell jar, reinforced by various Containment Charms, which he intended to drop over the poltergeist once he was in place. Well, as you may guess, it failed miserably. Not only did Peeves break easily through the giant bell jar, showering an entire corridor with broken glass, he also escaped the trap armed with several cutlasses, crossbows, a blunderbuss and a miniature cannon. The castle was evacuated while Peeves amused himself by firing randomly out of the windows and threatening all with death. A three-day standoff was ended when the Headmistress back then, Eupraxia Mole, agreed to sign a contract allowing Peeves additional privileges, such as a once-weekly swim in the boys’ toilets on the ground floor, first refusal on stale bread from the kitchen for throwing purposes, and a new hat – to be custom-made by Madame Bonhabille of Paris. Rancorous Carpe took early retirement for health reasons, and no following attempt has ever been made to rid the castle of its most mischievous inhabitant.

Peeves, even though he is mischievous in every way, does recognise authority of a sort. Though usually unimpressed by titles and badges, he is generally controlled to the strictures of the teachers, agreeing to stay out of their classrooms while they teach. He has also been known to show an affinity for rare students (notably Fred and George Weasley), and is definitely afraid of the ghost of Slytherin, the Bloody Baron.

Peeves has been hard to deal with, but he adds some spice to boring school life! Nothing like constant bangs and screeches coming from Peeves all the time!

I hope you learned something, and thanks for reading!

Who in the Wizarding World is this - Ollivander

The Ollivander name has been part of the hardships and mysteries of wandcraft for thousands of years. Young Mr. Ollivander grew up helping in the family business, which is believed to have started when the first Ollivander set up stall in Britain, coming from somewhere in the Mediterranean. Mr. Ollivander showed talent in the family business from a young age. During his childhood, magic folk were able to decide the wand core and wood, using something as the whisker of his/her favorite kneazle and their most fancied wood. Mr. Ollivander believed that wand cores should be from animals that have powerful magical capabilities, making the wizard just as powerful. He also believed that the wand should choose the wizard, instead of the wizard choose the wand. With great determination, Mr. Ollivander became one of the best wandmakers in the world. People would travel across the country just to get an Ollivander wand.

The Order of Merlin

The Order of Merlin, or OM, is awarded by the Wizengamot (a kind of high court and parliament). There are three classes.

The first class which is awarded for feats of outstanding bravery or a distinction of magic. It awards you a golden medal with a green ribbon. It is green because Merlin was a Slytherin. Dumbledore has a first class Order of Merlin.

The second class is awarded for achievement beyond the ordinary. It awards you a golden medal with a purple ribbon.

The third class is awarded for those who have made a contribution to entertainment or knowledge. This gives you a golden medal with a white ribbon.

Of course there are some cases which it seems really weird that the Order of Merlin was given. Like when Cornelius Fudge awarded himself first class. This is usually under the influence of the Ministry of Magic.

I hope you enjoyed this bit of information about the Order of Merlin!

My Favorite Harry Potter character

There are many incredible characters in Harry Potter. It’s really hard to pick just one. If I had to though I’d pick Hermione Granger. “One of my best friends is muggle-born, and she’s the best in our year” (Harry Potter about Hermione Granger, in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling).

Hermione reminds me of myself in many ways. I think that’s part of why I like her so much. She is very clever for one thing. She was disappointed when she didn’t get all O’s on her OWLs (she had one E). She was the one that figured out what the monster within the Chamber of Secrets was (a Basilisk), the one that noticed the trapdoor under Fluffy in the Sorcerer’s Stone (I could go on but I won’t bore you). She is also quick to react in dangerous situations, especially while on the hunt for Horcruxes. One example is when Nagini showed up in Godric’s Hollow. Hermione was the one that made sure her and Harry got to safety.

Hermione is also one of the only people who believes in freedom for House-Elves. She was the one that created S.P.E.W. She has good ideas. The DA (Dumbledore’s Army), was her idea. Hermione is also concerned about other people. An example of this would be when she modified her parents memories so that they would be safe while she was looking for Horcruxes.

One more thing is that she has incredible quotes. Here are my favorites (from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone).

“Stop, stop, stop. Your going to take someone’s eye out. And besides. Your saying it WRONG. It’s LeviOsa. Not LevioSAA.”

“Now I’m going to bed, before either of you come up with another CLEVER idea to get us killed. Or worse. Expelled.”

“Me? Books and cleverness. There are more important things. Like friendship, and bravery. Oh Harry do be careful.”

This is purely my opinion and I’m not criticizing anyone who doesn’t agree with this!!

Fun Fact

It’s time for your fun fact!

Did you ever wonder what Dumbledore's wand (The Elder Wand) was made of??
Well, here’s what J.K. Rowling said about it:

“That would have been quite a telling question,” Rowling told Time. “Because I had this elder thing in my mind, cause elder has this association in folklore, it's the death tree. I thought, ‘What am I going to say?’” Thankfully, no one ever asked.
