Social Behaviours: How Do They Interact? Part I

Chapter 3

"What is most interesting about the merfolks is how they interact with humans and other merpeoples. This chapter will talk about how they behave under many forms."

Agressivity:

Like mentioned in the previous chapters, merfolk's aggressivity can differ from the water they live in, salt water merfolks being more agressive and violent, even to their own kind. the question is why? why are they like that? Here are my theories."

When we think of aggressivity issues of the salt water merfolks, what can come to mind first is the presence of much more predators. In seas and oceans, their main predators are large sized sharks and Orcas, or also known as killer whales. They could have developed this characteristic to help them survive and intimidate their main predators or other competitive species like other merfolks or large sized fish.

Sweet water merfolks do not have any predators. In fact, they are at the top of the food chain of their ecosystem. It appears that they are conscious of this ecosystem and will hold themselves to hunt some kind of fish if they see it becomes more rare. They also do not tolerate that people pollute their water point.

"Rumors has it that one day, a groupe of merfolks jumped out of the water and brutally murdered a muggle who threw his trashes in their lake. This rumor gave them bad reputation and has never been proved. I personally believe it is only a story to give them a bad side. But who really knows?."

Social Construction and interactions:

Merfolks have a really strict and well constructed social pyramid. At the very top of it reign the Queen or The king. Queens are mostly seen in strictly female groupe which are usually seen in seas and oceans. Although, it is not uncommon to see a queen at the head of a mixed sex community in sweet waters. The king can be compared to an alpha male. He is the one in control of the clan and he only make important choice, especially about interactions with other species, mostly about human-merfolk relations.
Then, right under the King and/or the Queen are those called citizens or followers. The consist of the rest of the group.
In some cases, the social structure can take more as a democracy. Choices are made by group decisions.

If there is a specie the Merpeoples are especially at easy with, its the Centaurs. In fact, Centaures and Merpeoples has joined together many times for their rights. the both share a similarity: they are half "human" and half beast. Although, unlike centaures, they do not have magic specialities, unlike their half horse friends who are known to be quite efficient in the art of Divination. It is taught they can use wands, but is has never been proved as they strictly refuse.
