Duels Of A Nightingale
Chapter 8
The following night the girls got another idea to sneak out of Hogwarts. All three decided to creep into an underground secret entrance to Honeyduke's Candy Store and steal some sweets. Austin; however, did not like sweets and didn't like the idea of committing a small crime, so he stayed at the school while they went.
He practiced his new spells he had learned from his defense against the dark arts class and other sources. A fellow Gryffindor boy, Brad Sterricker, taught him the rictusempra charm in the common room and his few spell books he checked out from the library taught him Incendio and other spells. Finally, the girls had gotten back and he met them in the Great Hall with Marie plopping some pumpkin pastries in front of him.
"Here. We thought you might want at least something, so we brought you these," Marie said.
"Thanks." Austin said stuffing the boxed goods into his pack. Even though they were stolen, he couldn't resist a few pumpkin pastries for late night studying. The girls dug into their shares and began eating their Liquorice Wands and Bertie Botts Every Flavored Beans.
Kendall noticed him reading spell books and his wand illuminating from the past spells he cast.
"You're learning some spells? You should join the dueling club with me and Marie!" she yelled. Austin looked at her confusingly tilting his head. He had heard of wizard duels in school, but they weren't supposed to be for first years.
"What do you mean; duels?" He asked.
"You know wand vs wand, wizard vs wizard. Casting spells to disarm the other, duels." she said with a devilish smile.
Before he could speak, the door quietly creaked as a little girl stepped through the Great Halls tall doors. She had the robes of a Gryffndor, but he had never seen her around the hall or the common room.
"Hello there, fellow Gryffindor!" he said. The girl stayed quiet and walked over to Marie who was drinking her favorite drink; grape juice. The girl gave her a foxy grin before snatching it from her and running away.
"Hey!" Marie screamed as she gave chase to the child. She ran to another Gryffindor boy, Peter James, who was eating pizza and reading up on his History of Magic book, and snatched his pizza as well. She was just about to reach Austin when he got up and, to her surprise, snatched her.
"What is this all about?" he asked her lifting her into the air. She took a bite of pizza and a sip of grape juice before speaking, making Peter and Marie more annoyed.
"Hi! My name is Rin Nightingale." she said.
"You little thief!" Marie said stomping towards the child. Austin stepped in front of her and held up his hand in a stopping gesture. She stopped immediately, giving him her angry glare. He put the girl down, knelt to her height, and stared deeply into her eyes.
"Now Rin, you should know that stealing is wrong and that it isn't a way to make friends. You're a Gryffindor, and you should show a good example for our house and not commit personal conflict with others. Now apologize, and give their stuff back to them." he said sternly.
The shame on Rin's face showed him his message had hit her and she gave the pizza and juice back.
"I'm sorry." she said as Peter and Marie's hearts melted at the girls cute sad face. Austin tapped her on the back and as she turned he gave her a pumpkin pastry from his pack.
"Here. Instead of taking next time ask for some." he said with a friendly smile. The girl hugged him and sat next to him as Kendall brought back up the dueling.
"So, are you up for a little duel?" she asked getting out her wand.
"Where would this even happen? I'm a first year, so I don't have a dueling class." he said.
" You do know there is a dueling club right?" Kendall asked. Austin had almost forgot about the bending of rules the clubs brought with them.
"Well then, you're on!" he said with a devious grin as he grabbed his wand.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The two walked to the club sign in sheet and Austin signed it straight away. The club key was given to him and they headed down the halls to a big room that inside had a small, long stadium that had bleachers on the side. The two went to opposite sides of the stadium and stepped inside as gates magically lifted up from the sides. A familiar face stepped forward out of the shadows to be the referee of the match.
"Well what a coincidence. Hello again, Austin Chiavaroli." said Brad Sterriker.
'You're a ref Brad?" Austin asked.
"Yep, now here are the rules, since I can tell this is your first duel. Curses are forbidden, do not hurt each other too physically or the other will automatically win, and have a little fun." he said. He walked to the side of the stadium and raised his hand. "I hereby give permission for this match. Now....duel!" he yelled.
Straight away Kendall cast the first spell, it was Incendio. Austin quickly lifted his wand and shouted auguamenti to put out the fireballs hurtling towards him. One fireball was missed and came close to hitting him, as he fell to the ground dodging the inferno. He got back up and yelled rictusempra sending a silver ball towards Kendall, knocking her to the ground laughing from it's tickling nature.
A crowd had began to form as Peter and other people started to come in.
Rin and Marie came in as well, Marie rooting for Kendall and Rin rooting
for Austin.
"Pretty good, but try this!" she shouted, "Verdimillious!"
Green lines shot towards Austin, quickly hitting him with a singing pain and knocking him off his feet, which made Marie laugh hysterically. She shouted glacius, the ice spell, as a block of ice came hurdling towards him. The boy cast incendio making the stadium floor soaking wet.
He cast obliviate back towards Kendal, who shouted protego stopping the spell in its track. Austin began barraging multiple spells and charms at the shield with no luck of breaking it. The spell protego keeps the wizard from harm of most spells, but the user cannot send any charms back until they drop the shield. He had seen it in one of the libraries spell books, but had not perfected it yet.
In a shock, he remembered the counter he had learned and had perfected. He lifted his wand and shouted.
"Finite Incantatem!" Austin yelled as a red bolt shot out and shattered the shield blocking Kendall.
The girl shouted flipendo, but the boy used Kendalls own trick against herself, as he cast protego in front of him, destroying the spell. However, he brought down the shield and shouted auguamenti again and splashed water onto Kendall, making her soaking wet. She had fallen into his trap and before she could say an incantation, Austin cast glacius onto her, freezing her in place.
He then pointed his wand at the girls hand and shouted expelliarmus, disarming her and winning him the match.
Everyone cheered and gave him a pat on the back for winning on his first duel. Austin gave Kendall a fair handshake on a good match and Marie sighed with disappointment.
He talked with Rin the rest of the night, as a close friendship began to form between the two.
