Chapter 6
An hour passed and the four students met up at Hagrids Hut. They carried lanterns and their wands with them.
"Everyone ready?" he asked. They all nodded in assurance. "Alright then let's go."
They entered the dark forest quietly and began to walk towards the middle. The forest was darker than Austin had thought it would be. Even the lanterns only lit the area around their feet. Their front was completely pitch black.
Suddenly, a crack was heard.
"What was that?" said Manroop.
"Werewolves?" Kendall asked. Austin hadn't realized that it was the night of a full moon, until he looked up and saw the glowing white orb in shining in the night sky.
"Well, seeing as how it's a full moon, I'd say that is a possibility." he said
"Maybe it's centaurs." said Marie hugging her hammer.
Austin listened for any hooved sounds. There was a padded noise going around them.
"Something is circling us, but it isn't centaurs." he said. "Let's keep walking and maybe we'll lose whatever it is."
The four carried on and soon the sound stopped. Before long they had hit a clearing. The trees spread out and a giant pit was in front of them. All around they could see long white silky webs that stretched from tree to tree.
"Wait, I just remembered something. Does anyone have a copy of Magical Beasts and Where To Find Them?" Manroop asked. Austin quickly whipped out his copy and gave it too her.
"What are you trying to find?" he said.
"How far have you read it?" she asked.
"I'm half way through it. I'm between Pixies and Fairies."
"Figures you haven't gotten to the more dangerous creatures yet. I thought I had heard of these things before and it has been driving me crazy for the past hour trying to remember it." she said flipping through pages. Finally she stopped on a specific page and gave him he book back. "Here. The acromantula, a highly venomous giant spider capable of human speech."
"Wait, so these things are well known and are, for a fact, real?" Marie said nervously. Kendall began shaking with her.
"Yes." Manroop said.
"And these things can speak English?" Austin said surprised.
"That's what the book says."
"Well then maybe we can befriend one of them." he said with a cautious grin
"I don't know, it says they favor the meat of a human." she said
"Oh god no! Ew!" said Marie stepping back. The girl tripped backwards from a fallen tree branch and into one of the webs. The bounce her fall had made carried through the many webs, like a pulse. The three plucked her off of the web.
"Be more careful Marie." Austin said plucking off all the strings.
"Sorry." she said.
All around small hissing noises could be heard.
"Um, what is that?" Kendall said.
"I have a good guess." Austin said as he took out his wand. "Lumos!" he shouted. The shining light on his wand illuminated a bunch of giant faces with eight eyes and fangs that ran up all of the trees. He had never seen spiders that big in all of his life as one hissed and snapped for his hand holding the wand. He quickly brought it back and out of the spiders reach.
"Run!" he shouted as they turned tail and ran. The spiders gave chase as the four dodged trees and jumped over logs trying to find their way back to the forest entrance. Marie and Austin turned into their animagus forms to make them able to run faster.
"So you guys are animagus too?" Manroop said as she transformed as well into a monkey. She jumped up to the trees and began to swing quickly from branch to branch. Kendall for some odd reason had abnormal speed and kept up with the other three, Austin was too busy running to wonder how.
A bunch howling was heard from behind and Kendall had disappeared. As all four made it out of the forest and up too Hagrids Hut. Marie and Manroop jumped to the roof and Austin stayed to the ground. They all transformed back to being human and looked to the forest. Growling and hissing could be heard from inside the forest trees.
"Where's Kendall?" Manroop asked. Austin stayed quiet and kept looking at the forest silently.
A howl was heard before human like creatures emerged from the forest. Their faces were elongated and they had fur covering them. They had no tails and their long canine teeth shines in the moonlight. They were what Austin had hoped to one day study with his career, Werewolves.
Kendall emerged from them as well.
"Kendall? You're a werewolf?" Marie said pointing her hammer. The girl growled to the werewolves in their language, then walked up to them. The boy had heard of the beasts being nonsensical, they would even eat their best friend if given the chance. But here they seemed like a family and were not hurting Kendall who appeared human.
"I am half of a werewolf." she said. "Don't think any less of me please."
"I won't Kendall, in fact," the boy said walking up "I find it cool."
Kendall was happy of this news, Marie; however, was not.
"Just as long as they don't eat me. I'm staying up here." she said
"Marie if they were gonna eat you they would of done it already." Austin said giving her a disappointing look.
"Well I must get them to a safe spot in the woods. Take care my new friends." she said.
"Kendall, tell them I said thank you for saving us." Austin yelled before they entered the forest. A howl was heard as they disappeared out of sight.
The three went inside sneaking around every corner to get back to their dorms without getting caught. Finally the boy reached his bed and fell asleep with that howl still echoing in his mind.
