Chapter 2
Moving on…
OWLs are graded on a scale of 3 passing grades: O = Outstanding, E = Exceeds Expectations and A = Acceptable and 3 failing grades P = Poor, D – Dreadful, T = Troll.
I took the standard required OWLs and received this:
Ancient Runes – O. (Professor Bathsheda Babbling)
I speak 3 languages (Parseltongue, Elvish, English) and was interested in understanding it. Plus, I had spoken to Bill and he had said that it would be a good one to take up if I wanted to work in any Ancient Magical society. It really was one of the only ones I chose for myself. Although when you decide between Runes and Divination, to me there is not a lot of argument. It was Runes all the way.
Care of Magical Creatures – O (Professor Rebeus Hagrid)
In 94/95 Hagrid was the teacher for Care of Magical Creatures. He had different ways of doing things which my uncle didn’t approve of but this was a necessary owl and I got an Outstanding. Mostly because if you know how Hagrid is likely to teach, you can get through the exam.
Defence against the Dark Arts – O (Professor Alastor Moody)
Another necessary subject and he had the annoying habit of telling people that they could be Aurors if they worked for it. It made no difference. I believe I studied hard for it. I have always been good in Defence against the Dark Arts. No surprise for some.
History of Magic – O (Professor Cuthbert Binns)
Unless you are really stupid, pretty much everyone gets an O in History of Magic. Some carry on into NEWT level just to det something good. It isn’t that hard. The exam consists of writing about a period in time that you found interesting. You need to have researched it and you are basically handed an Owl on a plate.
Muggle Studies – O (Professor Charity Burbage)
This I took because it would be a good idea to learn about half of me. After all I am part muggle and yet I have no understanding about the muggle world apart.
Potions – O (Professor Severus Snape)
Potions was naturally a first choice for me I was to have no say in it whatsoever. It was a case of. You’re doing it. Here’s the book get used to it. It wasn’t difficult though. Most of what we had to do was taught to us in our third year. A lot of people said I got off “easy” by being his niece and him giving me a better deal than the rest of the class.
Transfiguration – O (Professor Minerva McGonagall)
This I had already completed by the time I took my Owls. The only reason I passed with high marks is because I was studying with friends. Otherwise I had no idea how to take the written exam.
Astronomy – E (Professor Aurora Sinistra)
Astronomy I usually get annoyed at myself for. I took it and liked the class, so continued. However, I was 6 points off because I had not written enough about Jupiter and too much about the Moon. I was so close to getting an Outstanding I was SO annoyed. Anyway. The less said about it the better. I pride myself with at least being able to hold my head up high.
Herbology – E (Professor Pomona Sprout)
Herbology I thought I was going to do better in. And frankly I found my E a very disappointing mark. It was never my strongest subject but I had hoped for better results. Professor Sprout confessed her concerns over lunch one afternoon. It was, I think because I didn’t think about the infectious side. I really wish I had borrowed Neville’s book that he had been showing me. Something about magical fungi.
Charms – E (Professor Filius Flitwick)
Charms has and will always be my downfall. I studied with Cedric for ages. He didn’t need to take any exams, but being a good friend, he helped me non-the less. I reckon without his help I would have had A or P.
