Ode to you
Chapter 1
Not more than nineteen. Straw-blond hair. Taken to Azkaban and died. He was accused of using the Cruciatis curse on Frank and Alice Longbottom. Whether he did or not I have no idea. I would only have been very young at the time. It was said that he planned to restore “He Who Must Not Be Named” to power. He was a Death Eater and son of one of the most powerful men in the Ministry. His trial by all accounts was one that is noted when you start training as an Auror. One that no person should want to encounter for it must have been terrifying. Death Eaters, Dementors.
Master Barty Crouch Junior. I had met him before, although briefly. He had been my teacher for almost a year at Hogwarts and yet I had been unaware of it, under the disguise of Alastor Moody. This man had brought back my father to life. He viewed himself has the truest of all Death Eaters. Simply because he went to Azkaban Prison. In his eyes the ones that went to Azkaban were brave enough to do the worst and loyal enough to stand by him. The people that didn’t go, he says are treacherous cowards.
In 1994 he would have been in his early thirties. By all accounts, he should have been dead but he was alive. Very much alive. He was living with his father under imperious curse, under an invisibility cloak. They had a house-elf named Winky. After his release from Azkaban he had been forbidden to obtain a wand but saw a wand sticking carelessly out of a pocket and took it. He did not attack the muggles at the Quidditch World Cup but he did cast the Dark Mark in the sky that scared even Death Eaters.
He captured Bertha Jorkins in Albania and tortured her. He was a person that needed to be needed. He had lost his mother and was rejected by his father. He devoted himself instead to Lord Voldemort, who had a job for him, and as I know all too well, Voldemort enjoys using people. Playing with their emotions. Which is why the imperious curse is liked by him. He became “free” when his father was put under the curse. This allowed him to do all sorts of untold things. Even killing.
Barty and me? I don’t know what he knew about me. My parentage wasn’t something that was discussed freely by anyone. If you read the book on the Marauders map you will understand that I do not always show up on there as Louisa Snape. Unless Barty was looking for me it is likely he wouldn’t realise that the Riddle name ever appeared on there. Either as Sarah Louisa Snape-Riddle or Louisa Snape. I will admit that if Barty was teaching the way he could, he missed something. He could have been a wonderful teacher.
