Bone

Chapter 2
BONE OF THE FATHER, UNKNOWINGLY GIVEN.

As this suggests it requires a solid material. In most books it states that it must be the father however I think the bone of a mother would do equally well. The important thing is that they possess fifty percent of the genes of the person being resurrected and as long as you say the words correctly it should do well. It is also important that the temperature of the mixture in the cauldron reaches a certain temperature to allow the bone to disintegrate easily.

Personally, I am just glad they did not say of the child because I may have been in trouble. My father chose bones from his muggle father Tom Riddle of whom he shares a name but I will forever be confused as to why he used muggle parts and not magical. Perhaps he did not want to put any pain onto magical beings, certainly ones related to him. They were also easily accessible as the Riddles have a family graveyard in Little Hangleton.

Books suggest that the owner of the bone must not know to whom it is going or by whom it was taken, therefore they remain completely unknown throughout the journey. Giving and receiving of items from the dead is also important.

At this point the potion should turn vibrant blue in colour.
