Chapter 6) Week 6 - Cure For Boils Experience

Chapter 6

Review Assignment: Cure for Boils experience (Essay)

Cure for Boils

In this essay I will describe the steps that I take in order to ensure that a successful potion is produced.

The first and perhaps one of the most important things that I would do is to make sure that I put on my 'Dragon Hide Gloves' before I start to make the potion. This is important to ensure that no injuries are sustained during the making of my potion.

Next I would make sure that I have all of the correct equipment ready. The equipment that I get would be; a cauldron, a wand, a stirring tool, a mortar & pestle, a teaspoon, a tablespoon and a phial.

Once I have gathered all the equipment, I would gather the ingredients from my storage room. These would include; 6 Snake Fangs, 4 Horned Slugs, 2 Porcupine Quills, Sunflower Oil, Flobberworm Mucus and water.

FirstI would make sure that I remember to crush the snake fangs into a fine powder using the mortar & pestle. It is important to make sure that the Fangs are crushed completely because it will allow the reaction to take place faster.

I would set my cauldron up on it's stand and start a fire underneath, making sure to place an enchantment spell around it in order that the fire is contained.

I would then measure out 500 mls of the water to my cauldron and bring it to the boil.

Once the water is boiled, I would measure out 4 teaspoons of the crushed Snake Fangs and add them to the cauldron.

Measuring out the ingredients precisely, and adding them in the right order, is very important as not doing so would render the potion ineffective and toxic resulting in a blue hue when applied to the skin. Also not following the recipe exactly could cause boils rather than cure them!!

This mixture needs to be heated to 250 degrees Fahrenheit or 121 degrees Celsius for 10 seconds. It is very important that the water is only kept at this heat for 10 seconds as any longer and it would nullify the effects of the Snake Fangs. After 10 seconds the heat must be brought down to 212 degrees Fahrenheit or 100 degrees Celsius. Once I have reached this temperature, I would stir the mixture twice clockwise. It is imperative that it is stirred clockwise as stirring it anti-clockwise would cause the potion to spit out at me causing injury and I would not want that!

Some other important things to remember are to, take the cauldron off the heat BEFORE adding the porcupine quills or the cauldron will melt and produce a horrid odour, also to introduce the oil to the cauldron SLOWLY otherwise it will not bond with the water resulting in an undesirable texture and thickness.

Hopefully if I have followed the recipe correctly and remembered all of the above, then there will be pink smoke rising from my cauldron. My potion should be sky blue in colour and smell like wet grass!

Also to ensure an effective potion, I store it in a cool area for 3 days until it matured. After which I would transfer it in to another container with a lid and keep it at room temperature as if it is kept in temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius or 77 degrees Fahrenheit it could melt!
