Lavender & It's Uses
Lavender has many different uses in the muggle world. It has been thought for centuries to inflame passions as an aphrodisiac and is still one of the most recognized scents today among humans. In Germany, they have commended Lavender for treating insomnia, nervous stomach and anxiety. Although the British Pharmaceutical Society lists Lavender as a treatment for flatulence, colic and depressive headaches. Whereas in Spain Lavender is added to to treat diabetes and insulin resistance.
According to many medical journals, Lavender has the following properties:
. Antidepressant - used to treat Depression
. Analgesic - used to relieve pain
. Antiseptic - used to prevent diseases
. Cicatrizant - used to promote healing through the formation of scar tissue
. Expectorant - used to treat coughs
. Nervine - used as a sedative to calm nerves
. Vulnerary - used in the healing of wounds
It is also especially beneficial to the respiratory tract in particular, coughs, colds and influenza. It certainly eases breathing when lungs and sinuses are blocked with phlegm.
Lavender has also been named as one of the most useful essences to treat anxiety and stress. It is also good for aches, pains, muscle stiffness, joint stiffness and rheumatic discomfort.
As Lavender has many different uses, it makes the use of it in potion-making quite a good idea.
For instance: If a witch or wizard has been overusing 'Dragon Claw' then Lavender could be used to treat the side effect of an intense headache. Alternatively as 'Flobberworm Mucus' (used to thicken potions) smells musty then due to it's powerful and intense odour, Lavender could be used to combat this.
