Chapter 1
For the girls it’s all about the dress for the boys it’s about getting the hottest girl. I cared about neither of these things when we were informed about the ball. All I knew was that it was going to be disappointing. Because I wasn’t allowed to go with Cedric. We were “of limits” and my uncle had made it perfectly clear to both of us that we were not to go to the Yule Ball together. I didn’t even know if I would go at all.
The girls were getting excited. Most people thought I was going with Cedric but we came up with a cunning plan to work our way around the whole thing. Instead he was going to ask Cho Chang, a Ravenclaw in my year that I knew liked him and tell her not to tell anyone. It went more or less smoothly. He found the pressure of the girls intolerable at the best of times but this was more than usual. Girls would walk around in groups, go past the guy they wanted to go to the ball with, say hi, giggle and run off. I couldn’t face it. If it hadn’t had been so cold, I would have stayed by my usual tree but instead I opted for the library, great hall or common room. They were much easier places.
The ball was on Christmas Day and we only had a few days to go before the big night when my friends realised that the reason, I had been so quiet about the whole thing was because I still didn’t have a date. Katie, Leanne & Angelina were furious with me. Apparently, they had been in a group for weeks that dealt with the dresses and hair, all meeting at the three broomsticks. I of course, had no idea. They sent out spies to find out who was still available. I was warned that I may have to invite someone younger or just hope that everyone else had done the same. I didn’t need to panic. The whispers around Hogwarts go around quickly so you get informed fairly quickly.
There was a Durmstrang boy that was available. He was a friend of Krum’s and his name was Garit Prince. He didn’t look like the other Durmstrang boys. They usually seemed a bit gruff. But he was softer, friendlier. I decided that I would go with him. I don’t know if I was the only girl to ask a guy but I asked him anyway. It was after all a way of interacting between the schools. He had been my dance partner when we had been rehearsing so we at least knew we could do something right.
