The Eye Of The Quill
Chapter 11
After much debate over who
was going to carry the photograph to Professor's Quilmane office, as none of
them wanted to touch it anymore out of fear that it was cursed, Apolline took
out her tweezers and cautiously picked the picture up from the table. The group
then proceeded to move as swiftly as they could through the corridors.
Once in front of the
Professor's office, they found themselves at loss for what to do. In their
hurry, they had not considered the time and only now realized there was a good
chance the Eye of Hogwarts was still in his office. And they could not exactly
knock on the door and give him the picture or it would become evident that they
were behind the redecoration of his office. Apparently, the teacher had been on
the prowl the whole day trying to find the culprits.
"Right. So,"
Aranya whispered, turning and looking at the rest of the group. "What're
we gonna do now?"
"Maybe we could just
slip the picture under the door and run away afterward?" Anne suggested.
"I'm certainly not
doing it!" Apolline whispered. "I already carried the picture here,
someone else does it!" She held the tweezers out away from her body, the
picture dangling from it. The eye darted around between the girls, sending
chills down their backs.
"I can't. If I get in
any more trouble just now..." Rae shook her head, growing visibly pale at
the thought.
Adelaide looked at her
friend in concern, but also turned down the nerve-wracking task of sliding the
photo under the door.
"Fine, I'll do
it!" Aranya said. "But you better not leave me on my own. You wait
for me before running away or so help me God I will make sure that you will
have bugs in your bed every night!" She stepped forward and
snatched the picture from the tweezers, holding the very edge of it as she made
her way toward the office door as quietly as she could.
The other girls all
huddled together a few steps away from the office, breaths held as they
prepared to all bolt the moment the picture disappeared beneath the door.
Aranya tiptoed slowly toward the door and when she finally reached it she stood
back as far as she could so her shadow wouldn't pour underneath the door.
Slowly she knelt down, reaching her arm out and setting the picture onto the
ground. The eye darted between the door and Aranya, who shuddered and bit her
lip slightly as she slowly slid the picture until it was right next to the
bottom of the door. She took a breath in and prepared to quickly slide it under
the door when there was a click in front of her.
An echo of gasps rang
through the corridor as the office door opened and Professor Quilmane stood
there, an eyebrow raised as he looked down at Aranya, who gave him a smile and
chuckled somewhat nervously as she stood up, her hand gripping the picture and
sliding it behind her back. "Hello Professor."
"Might I ask what you
all are doing here?" He asked, eyes now moving from Aranya to the group of
girls still frozen in the hallway.
"Nothing, Professor.
Nothing at all. Just running away from Peeves...again," Adelaide
replied.
"And that's surely
the reason why Miss Felicin is crouched in front of my door? Because it's much
easier to run away from Peeves on all fours?"
The Professor's eyebrow
rose even higher and disappeared under his hair. (?)
"I, uh. I dropped
something." Aranya replied to Professor Quilmane somewhat hesitantly, the
picture behind her back gripped tightly in her hands.
"I thought it would
be funny to see if any of us can fit into the crack that separates the door and
the floor," Adelaide said with a small smile on her face.
Aranya shot a look at
Adelaide, and rolled her eyes before grinning a little, turning back to
Professor Quilmane and smiling back up at him. "She's kidding. Of
course."
Frowning, Professor
Quilmane waved his wand and the girls jumped as a sudden hurricane of pink
slips surrounded them in the corridor.
"Nooooo!!!" Rae
cried, ducking as she was bombarded by the swirling papers.
Through the whirlwind of
rustling pink, a familiar figure came into view. Professor Aolen, a curious
look on her face, walked up to Professor Quilmane, lightly placing her hand on
his arm.
"What's going
on?," she asked, her voice barely audible.
Professor Quilmane, still
apoplectic with fury, pointed brusquely into his office, indicating the
numerous photographs of eyes plastered to the walls.
Professor Aolen let out a
trilling laugh - almost birdlike. "Oh, do forgive them this time, Lexi.
Really, it's a work of art."
Professor Quilmane
frowned, taking in his office once more. Professor Aolen slipped her arm
further into his. "Do it for me, Lexi?"
"Lexi," Adelaide
muttered under her breath, laughing. She tried to cover up her laugh with
several coughs. The girls held their breath, trying not to laugh at the
nickname, fully knowing it would be signing their own death warrants. Aranya,
still the closest to them, bit her lip to keep herself from laughing as she
tried to fake innocence.
Professor Quilmane sighed.
"Why would I do such a thing, Aeri? They broke into my office, put up
horrifying pictures of my eye, and then pasted it all over my office! And how
am I supposed to take them down? This one - " he pointed at Rae, who was
cowering behind Anne, "Is well known for her horrendous muggle superglue!
It leaves a residue on the walls, even with magical removal!"
"I'm sure she didn't
mean any harm, Lexi," Professor Aolen said, drawing him closer, "It's
just a harmless prank."
"Aw, they're on
nickname basis? That's so cute," Apolline gushed quietly. The others
stifled their giggles as they continue to listen into the intense Aolmane
conversation, the monsoon of detention slips momentarily forgotten.
"Think of it as a
work of art, consider it a... gift." Professor Aolen smiled sweetly, and
Professor Quilmane's face noticeably softened ashe took her hand in his
own. "If you want," she said softly, "I could come in
and..."
The rest of her suggestion
was inaudible to the girls waiting in the hallway as Professor Quilmane nodded,
drawing her into his office. But just as he was closing the door on them, he
turned and leveled the girls a look that turned their blood to ice water in
their veins.
"The Eye sees
all!" he mouthed.
"Lollyjay is not such
a Jolly Rancher right now..." Adelaide lamented, as the girls took off
down the corridor.
Rae, Apolline, Addie,
Aranya, and Anne,
Flee down the corridor
As fast as they can.
Do run away, girls; run away do.
The Eye of the Quill is watching you!
