Rue
Chapter 1
A Tribute to: Rue
Rue was the Young Tribute that Katniss befriended and called an ally, mainly because she reminded Katniss so much of her sister Prim who was the same age as Rue and like her in many ways.
When the games began, Rue managed to snag some items from the Cornucopia and make for the trees and survived the blood bath by staying high. Not much else is known about what Rue did until meeting Katniss, other than that she spied on the Career Tributes from a distance.
Rue is officially met when Katniss is chased up a tree by the Career's and Peeta (Don't get mad at me, it had to be done as a ruse to save Katniss -Peeta), anyway, Rue was in a nearby tree and noticed that there was a nest of Tracker Jackers (Very angry bee's that can track a person when they set their mind on it, for those who didn't know -Peeta). Without speaking, Rue suggested that Katniss drop the Tracker Jackers on the Careers (She was always so clever and saw things that others couldn't). Katniss got stung by three of the Jackers and was unconscious for an unknown amount of days and Rue was the one who watched over Katniss to make sure she was alright, and even shared some of her leaves with Katniss to help with the venom.
That same day Katniss and Rue sit and talk and not much, but some information is found out about Rue.
She is from District 11, the agriculture district, and helped in the fields, picking apples from the orchards from sunrise to sunset. Because of how small she was at the age of 12, and how skilled she was at climbing trees and was one of the few people that could reach the top most of the trees where the branches were the smallest. Because she was so high up she was always the first one to see the flag that signaled quitting time. She found some Mockingjays in the trees and used them to signal to the others about the flag by singing to the birds her special call. Her and the Mockingjays were good friends that constantly sung back and forth while Rue worked. Rue actually recognized that there were Mockingjays in the arena.
When Katniss asked her favorite thing, Rue answered with music, she said that at the end of the harvest her district liked to celebrate by playing music.
Rue told Katniss that she was used to hunger and didn't need as much food as the others in the arena because she was the oldest of six girls and was used to giving more of her food to her sisters so they wouldn't be too hungry. Her family got very little food, they were not allowed to eat any of the food they harvested.
Rue told Katniss all about the Careers camp and was willing to create a distraction. She was supposed to light three fires in different areas to draw the Careers away from camp so Katniss could destroy their food and supplies, but while on her way to the third fire she was caught in a trap.
When Katniss finds Rue and rushes to her aid, but Marvel, the boy tribute from district 1, throws a spear and it lands in Rue's stomach. Katniss shoots an arrow at Marvel killing him then runs to Rue, there is no way of saving her but Katniss cuts her out of the net to give her more comfort. As Rue lied there, the life draining out of her, she asked for Katniss to sing for her. Katniss sings the famous song that has now become known as Rue's Lullaby.
After Rue dies Katniss covers her with flowers so that it looked like she was really sleeping in the meadow.
Let this tribute guarantee that no one will ever forget Rue, and never count her out.
