Chapter 7
The fires go out when the vision ends, and Izuku stares at the sail for a few minutes before muttering to himself. “We were voyagers.”
He jumps up and runs back down the path, repeating the line. “We were voyagers! We were voyagers! We were voyagers! We were voyagers!”
He runs right past his grandfather, but comes running back to him. “Why’d we stop?”
“Katsuki. When he stole from the Father Island, darkness fell. Todoroki awoke. Monsters lurked and boats stopped coming back. To protect our people, the ancient chiefs forbade voyaging. And now we have forgotten who we are.”
He stands up and leads Izuku down the water, pointing at a line of black ink almost across the beach rock. “And the darkness has continued to spread, chasing away our fish, draining the life from island after island.”
“Our island?” Izuku asks, staring at the black stains in disbelief. Torino nodded before continuing.
“But one day, someone will journey beyond our reef, find Katsuki, deliver him across the great ocean to restore the heart of Shoto.” He reaches up, and opened the necklace he wore. Izuku noticed it was the one the chief in the vision he had had worn. It had been passed down through the generations.
Torino handed Izuku a stone, and he gasped when he saw it. It was the blue-white stone with red hints that he had lost all those years ago.
“I was there that day. The ocean chose you.” Izuku turned to the sea and saw the water rising up.
“I thought it was a dream,” he said, staring at it as it sprayed around. The water crashed on top of Izuku as Torino gave a hearty “Nope!”
He pointed at a group of stars shaped like a fish hook. “Our ancestors believed Katsuki lies there, and the bottom of his hook. Follow it, and you will find him.”
Izuku turned to him. “But why did it choose me? I don’t even know how to make it past the reef. But I know who does!”
Toshi picked up the dying root, barely listening as the villagers told him things he already knew. “Please, please settle down.” He said, trying to think. But of course they kept complaining.
“We will find a way. We-“
“Can stop the darkness.” Izuku said, running into the meeting, holding the stone. “Save our island. This cave has boats, huge canoes. We can use them to find Katsuki. Make him restore the heart. We were voyagers, we can voyage again!”
Izuku ran after his father as he stormed out, trying to explain to him why he did what he did. “You told me to help our people. This is how we help our people.” Izuku slowed down when he watched his dad pick up a torch. “Dad...what are you doing?”
“I should’ve burned those boats a long time ago.” Toshi growled, marching towards the cave. Izuku panics and runs after him.
“No! Don’t! We have to find Katsuki! We have to restore the heart!” He holds out the stone Torino had given him. Toshi grabs it.
“There is no heart. This...this is just a rock!” He throws it and Izuku runs after it, screaming “No!”
He searches and picks it up. He turns to his father and is about to say something when he notices a cane a few feet from him. A very familiar cane.
A villager runs down, calling to them. “Chief! It’s your father!”
