I don't know!
Chapter 10
Evan was sat in a spare classroom with his seven friends, practicing the bubble-head charm. He figured that was his best bet as that was what Cedric did. They'd decided that following what Cedric had done was a good bet, for the time being (they still hadn't decided what to do about the maze).
“I think you've got it!” Lebron squealed excitedly. Evan smiled from inside his fish-bowl.
“Yeah, I definitely think this'll be better than Ha-” Ella stopped abruptly and her hand flew to her mouth.
“What?” Rhianna asked urgently. Then, she too realised. In fact, all seven (forget Eloise) realised.
“Harry,” they breathed.
“Who wants to go and tell him?” Jocelyn asked.
“I'll go,” James said decisively. The others nodded. Ella took out her notepad and tore a page out of it. She tidily wrote the poem from the egg onto it and handed it to James. He furrowed his brows in confusion but then he read it and his expression cleared.
“How do you remember that kind of stuff?” he asked the girl. She smiled and shrugged.
“Anyway, you have to take him to the prefects bathroom to sort everything out, be like Myrtle,” Ella explained briskly. James nodded and left the group.
“I can't believe we forgot,” Evan said sadly.
Lucas shrugged, “So? Who cares?”
The others gave Lucas a look.
“I don't quite get it, but what changes we make, I think we have to try and fix them but...” Eloise trailed off.
“Yeah, probably,” Ella said thinking. She'd been thinking about this for a while now, and about how to fix the hole of Cedric. She couldn't think of anything.
Later that day, once James had gotten back from his successful trip with Harry, and just before curfew they were in the library, plotting. Well, not quite plotting, more like planning. They had two portable whiteboards filled with Ella's scrawlings (she was playing scribe and was doing so frantically).
“But ultimately, if we stopped Harry from getting the cup, everything would go wrong,” Rhianna concluded.
“So we have to let Harry get the cup,” Ella said sadly. The others nodded slowly.
“But we have to make sure Evan goes with him and doesn't get killed!” Eloise said worriedly. Evan visibly paled.
“Mhm,” Lucas murmured callously. This could be Lucas being typical Lucas and not thinking before (or after) he spoke, but I suspect it's something more this time, it seems likely that it was to disguise his inward worry.
“Thanks Lucas!” he said sarcastically. “It's really nice to know that one of my best friends cares so much for me! I really like knowing that when I'm about to flipping DIE that my friends are so worried!”
“Evan,” Rhianna started soothingly, shooting Lucas a look.
“He didn't mean it,” Ella continued.
James cleared his throat loudly, “Back to more pressing matters. We need a solution.”
“I don't know!” Ella cried in anguish. She hated not knowing things and especially things this important. She ran her hands through her hair in frustration.
“Me neither,” Rhianna said. The others all shook their heads slowly.
“I don't think we can leave Harry alone for this,” Jocelyn said.
“But if I go with him, I'll be killed,” Evan said slowly. He said it in a voice that managed to hide the sob that was about to escape.
“I have an idea!” Ella cried out. She shot out of her seat and sprinted to the restricted section. As a seventh year, they had permission to do this.
“I hate it when she does that,” Lebron grumbled. The seven waited patiently for Ella to come back.
“I have it!” she said excitedly. She looked onto the page and read from it. “The invisibility cloak can be copied for a small period of time if done correctly. Unlike usual objects, it won't stay for long, two days at most. This is it guys! We duplicate Harry's cloak multiple times! The seven of us sneak into the maze and Evan will go normally. He'll then touch the cup and put the cloak on when he arrives!”
She breathed again after saying that all in about one breath.
“In English?” James asked. Ella scrunched her face at him.
“We sneak into the maze,” she said, deliberately slowly to be annoying. James mouthed haha at her so she sped up to normal tempo. “In duplicated versions of invisibility cloaks. We all touch the cup at the same time, that could be difficult but ah well. Then Evan'll put on his cloak and we'll watch and protect Harry while staying invisible.”
“Brilliant!” Rhianna said.
“Although,” Eloise continued.
“I've never seen a plan with so much that could go wrong,” Jocelyn finished. Ella smiled sheepishly.
“Well, for now that's fine,” Evan said with a yawn. “I'm done thinking for today, I've got the challenge tomorrow.”
“Yeah okay,” Ella said. “We'll stay here to tidy up. You guys go up to bed.”
“Night,” they all chorused. The Ravenclaws and Lucas left to head up to bed. The three Hufflepuffs picked up some books to pack away. As they turned around, they noticed someone stood there...
