Chapter 21
They were unsure. This quest was dangerous and dubious. No one had ever returned before. They didn’t have long to make up their minds. They decided to accept.
The darkness overwhelmed them. Slowly they crept further inside the tunnel, their footsteps echoing loudly as they tiptoes ion the cobbles. They could smell a sickening stench that made their noses crinkle in disgust and they could sense the dampness of the brick walls. Suddenly, they saw the silhouette of a creature lurking in the distance. Suddenly, they no longer felt alone. Suddenly, the felt very, very, very scared.
Small water droplets were slowly falling down from the curved ceiling, startling them every time one splashed onto their feet. They moved as quietly as a mouse, hoping not to disturb whatever else might be hiding in the shadows. The wind whined behind them – so faintly it could almost be someone whispering menacingly into their ears.
By this point they had completely lost their sense of time; they could have been there hours, days, weeks or maybe only seconds. They were no longer sure where they were. They were no longer sure if they were safe. They were no longer sure if they would ever escape…
