My Notes For All Core Subjects, Year One

Updated version of the book "My Notes, From A Ravenclaw (Year 1)" by Anne Pickering. Here you can find my notes for all nine lessons from the seven main subjects; Astronomy, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, History of Magic, Potions, and Transfiguration. Remember that although there are notes here, I might have missed something and it is still extremely important to pay attention and take notes in your lessons. This is just to help struggling first-year students who think they may have missed vital information in the lesson. I will try to update one chapter/lesson every day. Day started: July 11 2020

TNFG-101 Lesson One: Introduction to Transfiguration

Chapter 8
Be Our Guest
- assignments will mostly be a short ten qns quiz + additional extra cred. essay
--> essays are optional and will not affect your overall grade
- Lesson 5 --> midterm, covering first half of the course
--> Lesson 9 --> finals

WHAT IS TRANSFIGURATION?
- very precise and delicate branch of magic
- alteration of objects in our physical world, working with molecular structure of the object
- very dangerous form of magic, as it is easy to mess up.
--> if transfiguration spells go wrong, it can lead to catastrophic situations
- when working with molecules, you are changing its basic principles
--> energy is misplaced --> serious harm could befall you and those around you
- tnfg is a more scientific branch of magic --> there is a strict systematic approach to incantations & wand movements
- FOUR BRANCHES OF TNFG: transformation, vanishment, conjuration, untransfiguration
--> other forms of transfiguration: inanimate to inanimate, animate to inanimate, inanimate to animate, animate to animate

TRANSFIGURATION FORMULA:
- essential part & integral part of the science of tnfg (according to some)
- NOT a theoretical formula --> not an actual mathematical formula

Variables that cannot be measured:
--> have no numerical value
- wand power = strength of your wand, influenced by wood, core, length, flexibility, relationship
- viciousness - liveliness of the target object
--> cannot be zero
--> the only way is if the object is at zero Kelvin

Variables that can be measured:
--> how much "stuff" there is in the object
- mass of first object

- quantum physics: theoretical kind of physics
--> theories are hard to wrap your mind around
--> first glance seems to hold little practical application
- no one TRULY understands how tnfg works
--> (that is why tnfg formula is a quantum physic)
--> which is why variable Z is put in
~> the one piece of transformation that no one can truly quantify
~> = one of the big mysteries of transfiguration
~> some theories on Z: complexity of life within object; molecular makeup of the object; individual's aptitude for the spell; combo of several factors

- larger "value" for difficulty, t, means an easier spell
--> smaller value --> difficult spell
- tip: figure that if a target object has a large mass, adding more concentration will be easier
- tip: if you know your wand isn't the greatest w/ transformation spells, a less vicious target would be easier

DANGERS OF TRANSFIGURATION:
Why is transfiguration dangerous?
- many opportunities for things to go wrong, and disastrously so.
--> DO NOT try spells above your year
--> learning tnfg spells that hasn't been taught will be severely docked for in assignments
- spells backfire / aren't completed correctly, it will prevent items from completing their transfigurations
--> ex. what would happen if you transformed yourself gills and it only worked halfway?
--> ex. if you tried to vanish something and it only worked halfway?
