My Notes For All Core Subjects, Year One
written by Lindsay Clearwater
Updated version of the book "My Notes, From A Ravenclaw (Year 1)" by Anne Pickering. Here you can find my notes for all nine lessons from the seven main subjects; Astronomy, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, History of Magic, Potions, and Transfiguration. Remember that although there are notes here, I might have missed something and it is still extremely important to pay attention and take notes in your lessons. This is just to help struggling first-year students who think they may have missed vital information in the lesson. I will try to update one chapter/lesson every day. Day started: July 11 2020

PTNS-101 Lesson One: Hello, Hello, Hello (Introduction)
Chapter 7
COURSE READING:
- all the info needed will be in the lesson
- not needed to read Magical Drafts & Potions, but highly recommended
- keep your notes form prev. yrs, this is a cumulative course
- anyone who wishes to pursue a career in potions must also pay attention in Herbology & COMC classes, that's where we get our ingredients from
- occasionally will be assignments where you will have to do outside research, but those are mostly extra cred. assignments
--> will not call for extra cred. assignments till lesson 3
ASSIGNMENTS:
- first 2 yrs -- only mandatory assignments are quizzes
--> include a mix of multiple choice, T/F, short answer questions
- almost every lesson will have extra cred. essay option to test knowledge of material
--> creative in nature, will ask to apply knowledge to a "real world" setting
- beginning 2nd year, will be an optional "Potioneer's Log" assignments to write at least 1000 words each year to reflect on your overall experience & reflect on your learning
- beginning 3rd year, another optional assignment, a thesis in which the student can research any aspect of potions that interests them
GRADING:
- essay & non quiz assignments: rubric will be presented + bullet points illustrating every potion that should be in the assignment
- you will never lose cred. for original content or disagreement with course material IF presented respectfully and with proper defense
PLAGIARISM:
- will not be tolerated at all
- PAs + Prof. use plagiarism checkers
- if found plagiarizing, result is 1%
- quotes are ok, but cited content < 5%
WITH THE LIGHTS OUT, IT'S LESS DANGEROUS:
- dress code: sufficient covering, closed-toed shoes, dragon-hide gloves, goggles
--> NO overly bulky garments
--> NO long-hanging jewelry, pin hair back.
- wait until all info is given before touching anything when we are working with actual ingredients & potions
- wait until prof. gives permission before brewing
- pranks will not be tolerated
- when an accident happens, do not panic
--> do not involve yourself in any other accidents if you see one
- be careful with the wands; do not point to yourself or to another student
HERE WE ARE NOW:
- potion: magical mixture that combines both magical and mundane ingredients
--> potions are brewed over fire or another thermal energy (heat) source in a cauldron
- "potion" term is rather generic, it represents any magical combo of ingredients that has been brewed to achieve a certain effect
--> ex. of effects: aiding headaches, increasing energy, causing a body part to swell, changing eye color or appearance, providing strong poisoning effects
- difficulty of brewing the potion varies, some can take 20 mins, others can take 24 hrs
- ONLY a WITCH/WIZARD should take a potion
--> MUGGLE exposure --> lead to unusual and often deadly reactions
- in the past, it is shown that Muggles could have been slightly more tolerant of potions & elixirs
--> they used to be able to consume love potions (ex.), wizards used to create love potions and gave them to Muggles
--> though it is not known whether it is a real love potion or not
- when the Statute separated wizards & Muggles, what little tolerance Muggles had with potions faded
--> their bodies got adjusted to not being able to consume potions
--> BUT there are SLIGHT EXCEPTIONS.
