My Notes For All Core Subjects, Year One
written by Lindsay Clearwater
Updated version of the book "My Notes, From A Ravenclaw (Year 1)" by Anne Pickering. Here you can find my notes for all nine lessons from the seven main subjects; Astronomy, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, History of Magic, Potions, and Transfiguration. Remember that although there are notes here, I might have missed something and it is still extremely important to pay attention and take notes in your lessons. This is just to help struggling first-year students who think they may have missed vital information in the lesson. I will try to update one chapter/lesson every day. Day started: July 11 2020

THE DARK ARTS: AN INTRODUCTION:
- impossible to say there is a "beginning" to Dark Arts -- if there is a light, there is dark
- "Dark Arts": blanket term that covers anything that has the intent to harm, injure or even kill another person
- Dark Arts include many branches of magic, particularily potions and charms
- Those who desire and seek power will immerse with Dark Arts
- Once the Dark Arts have a hold on you, they never let you go
--> Once you cast your first Dark Spell, they will continue to corrupt you, making it incapable of resisting the power you felt when you first cast the spell
- this power comes at a price -- as the Dark Arts corrupt your soul, it will also corrupt your body
--> e.g. Lord Voldemort used to be a handsome young man, until he traversed the Dark road & his body became corrupted and mutilated. "He no longer looked like a human being."
- From mid-1985 --> 1998, Voldemort worked to attain power after regaining human form (the form was lost when he killed the Potter fam in 1981)
- quest for power: 1) getting his Death Eaters into positions of power in the MoM. IN 1997, he succeeded & was ready to change the world.
--> they were able to pass laws into action -- laws that made the Dark Arts legal. 1997-1998 school year at Hogwarts, DADA became Dark Arts
- Scariest part about Dark Arts: they can never be defeated / can never be completely known
--> once we have "beaten" one aspect, another will take its place & beaten branch will come back stronger than ever. It will have learned new tricks that made old methods ineffective.
--> "We can never conquer the Dark Arts. We can only hold them back."
- Despite the fact that it is impossible to "know" Dark Arts, Ministry made an effort to understand them by creating 5 categories of known Dark magic: Dark spells, Dark potions, Dark creatures, Dark artifacts, Dark practices.
THE DARK ARTS: THE THREE SPELL CATEGORIES:
- Jinx: first & lowest level of Dark spell. Usually will not cause much harm & considered to be more of a minor imitation. Anything classified as jinx will not do any lasting damage, only used as a distraction
--> ex. tripping jinx, stinging jinx, knockback jinx
- Hex: second classification of Dark spell. A bit darker than the Jinx, will do more lasting damage. All hexes have effects that do more damage to target, viewed as major inconveniences that cause moderate amount of suffering. Can be reversed thru Hex Breaker.
--> ex. bat-bogey hex, hurling hex, densaugeo
- Curse: darkest & most dangerous classification of the Dark Arts. Usually cast with the intent to severely harm or potentially kill target. Use of these spells is often discouraged unless absolutely necessary.
--> ex. reductor curse, full body-bind curse, conjunctivis curse
- category of curses that fall under the curse category; known as Unforgivables Curses
--> Unforgivable Curses: darkest spells known to wizarding kind. The use of any one of these curses will earn you a lifetime stay in Azkaban.
THE WAND-LIGHTING AND WAND EXTINGUISHING CHARMS:
Wand-lighting Charm:
- when performed properly, lights up the tip of the caster's wand
- more like a light in the Muggle world called a flashlight
- requires very little concentration and willpower
- must carefully pronounce incantation (LOO-mos), ccw loop
- great for navigation in dark places, makes it easier to see where you normally could not
- casting the wand-lighting charm allows you to move away from Dark creatures that have an aversion to light, because they will not approach you when your wand is lit.
Wand-extinguishing Charm:
- incantation to put out light: Nox (NOCK-ss)
- flick in any direction or slight jab
- *PRONOUNCIATION IS IMPORTANT.*
- a few simple spells that will begin to build the foundation for spellwork in future yrs
