My Notes For All Core Subjects, Year One

Updated version of the book "My Notes, From A Ravenclaw (Year 1)" by Anne Pickering. Here you can find my notes for all nine lessons from the seven main subjects; Astronomy, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, History of Magic, Potions, and Transfiguration. Remember that although there are notes here, I might have missed something and it is still extremely important to pay attention and take notes in your lessons. This is just to help struggling first-year students who think they may have missed vital information in the lesson. I will try to update one chapter/lesson every day. Day started: July 11 2020

--> write at least 2-5 paragraphs
--> each paragraph at least 5 sentences

- required reading: no required reading! You are welcome to read any supplementary texts if you wish, but none are required to pass this class

- Charms: introduction to spell-casting
- Touch on: basics of spell-casting (including importance of pronouncing spells correctly), practicing wand movements, casting basic charms, basics of wandlore (such as why we need a wand for proper spellcasting), what wands are typically made of, why it is important to care for them

BRIEF HISTORY & ESSENTIAL LAWS:
- magic was practiced much more openly & freely
- Ancient Greece & Egypt: witches and wizards were in high regard
- magic used to protect ancient tombs
- first instances of wandmaking -- Ollivander family --> since 382 B.C.E
- beginning around 1000 C.E. wizarding world began separating form Muggles
- approx. 400 yrs (from 1000 C.E. to 1400 C.E.) ruled by Council of Warlocks
- 1400s: various magical governments were established
- witches and wizards persecuted throughout 1000s with instances like witch burnings (put flame-freezing charm, which allows the castor to feel slightly "ticklish" when flames come in contact with them. The castor then pretends to writhe in pain and burn) but that was culminated with the intro of International Statute of Secrecy in 1689
- law created to protect magical and non-magical communities -- witches & wizards seek revenge on Muggles
--> took further 3 yrs before it was officially established by all governments
- over centuries, magic has been legend for Muggles, only documented in fairy tales and stories, hallucinations and wild dreams.
- when an incident is too big, Ministry will send in Accidental Magic Reversal Squad to sort things out, usually thru memory modifying
- another law: anyone under the age of 17 --> Decree for the Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery (est. 1875)
- no student is allowed to practice magic outside of school. Exception: if your life or a life of another wizard, witch or Muggle is at stake
- Effects of the Trace until you turn 17
--> all magic outside Hogwarts will be detected
- Ministry is able to distinguish btwn Muggle & magical homes
--> magical home: adults will be casting magic too -- underage magic will not be detected as easily
--> Muggle home: no one except underage party would be using magic -- easier to be detected
--> ministry can determine location, but not necessarily who cast it

DISCOVERY OF WANDS:
- magic was not always taught and controlled
--> uncontrolled bursts of magic -- norm several millennia ago
- those with weak affinity for magic lead normal lives, but others caused great destruction
- primitive tools (e.g. crystals, crude wands made of Hippogriff wing wrapped on sticks, metal rods) allowed some to have some control over their magic
- eventually, most effective foci, the modern wand, was created
--> wooden shaft containing core from a powerful magical creature
--> allows us to focus & channel power to receive desired result
- now, witches and wizards spend less time worrying that their wand will explode, and more time experimenting w/ different spells & gestures

WAND-LIGHTING & WAND-EXTINGUISHING CHARMS:
- wand-lighting charm: allows you to light up the tip of your wand
- first known use: 18th century -- cr. Levina Monkstanley (MoM employee)
--> first used in 1772 when she dropped her quill & used spell to find it
- can be used to repel incorporeal threats such as the Gytrash (vicious spectral hound)

Wand-lighting Charm
Incantation: Lumos (LOO-mos)
Wand Movement: single ccw loop
Willpower: low, determines color of light (notes below)
Concentration: low, lighting up the top of your wand
- too much mental push = scarlet color
- not enough = pearly white
- aim for a nice, light yellow
- if you let go of your wand, the light will go out

Wand-extinguishing Charm
Incantation: Nox (NOCK-ss)
Wand Movement: flick of the wand
Willpower: none
Concentration: none
- can be quickly cast, effect is immediate
- no harm of backlash, very safe
