My Notes For All Core Subjects, Year One

Updated version of the book "My Notes, From A Ravenclaw (Year 1)" by Anne Pickering. Here you can find my notes for all nine lessons from the seven main subjects; Astronomy, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, History of Magic, Potions, and Transfiguration. Remember that although there are notes here, I might have missed something and it is still extremely important to pay attention and take notes in your lessons. This is just to help struggling first-year students who think they may have missed vital information in the lesson. I will try to update one chapter/lesson every day. Day started: July 11 2020

ASTR-101 Lesson One: Introduction

Chapter 2
*In year 1 Astronomy, you will observe the skies with a magical telescope, learn about our solar system neighbors, and discover how magic reflected off astronomical objects can affect us all on Earth.*

- Astronomers define "astronomy" as the study of the universe
- Muggles and wizards alike consider topics such as, observing celestial bodies (ex. moons, asteroids, comets, planets, stars, nebulae, galaxies), theorizing about how objects in outer space have been formed, and deducing the chemical makeup of these bodies as part of astronomy.
- Muggle & wizard approaches greatly bend, esp. prior to International Statue of Secrecy, but still has differences, each having its advantages & its limitations.
--> Advantage of magical approach: obv. magic, we have access and know about a whole other world, whereas Muggles are oblivious. We can do things magically that Muggles can't.
--> Advantage for Muggles: they are excellent at observational and theoretical astronomy.
(Observational astronomy: focuses on finding objects in space.)
(Theoretical astronomy: focuses on applying tech & astronomical concepts to a model in order to answer a question.)
--> Muggles focus on non-magical based theories / Wizards focus on magical based theories
- Magic can get in the way of research (ex. electricity/computers can't be used at Hogwarts), which is why Muggles are more proficient in observational astronomy
--> magical astronomers excel at applied astronomy

HOW TO GET AN O IN ASTRONOMY:
- come to class prepared
--> Wednesday nights, 10 pm
--> von Rheticus magical telescope (starting lesson 3)

--> assignments are open-book
--> two types of assignments: objective (labeled under quiz, midterm, final) / essay (labeled essay)
~> objective: multiple choice, T/F, short answer. Al answers found in the lessons.
