My Notes For All Core Subjects, Year One
written by Lindsay Clearwater
Updated version of the book "My Notes, From A Ravenclaw (Year 1)" by Anne Pickering. Here you can find my notes for all nine lessons from the seven main subjects; Astronomy, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, History of Magic, Potions, and Transfiguration. Remember that although there are notes here, I might have missed something and it is still extremely important to pay attention and take notes in your lessons. This is just to help struggling first-year students who think they may have missed vital information in the lesson. I will try to update one chapter/lesson every day. Day started: July 11 2020

DADA-101 Lesson Two: Bright Lights and A Little Revealer
Chapter 11
COMPONENTS OF SPELLCASTING:
- concentration: also referred to as "focus"
--> the only term that has an interchangeable equivalent
--> "concentration" and "focus" both refer to the mental process that goes to channeling your magic on a specific target to accomplish and effect
--> spell needs to be instructed
~> partially done by the incantation, primarily done by thinking specifically what you want the spell to do
- willpower: magical force you exert to make the spell happen
--> seems simple but takes time to train properly
--> most spells require at least some level of willpower (you have to want the spell to work)
~> ex. if you want to push a desk, you need to exert physical force/effort
~> you need mental effort for spells to work
- wand movement: waving the wand
--> in DADA, wand movements are simple since you need to cast them quickly
~> though they can also be complex
--> sometimes you don't need wand movements to cast a spell
- incantation: "funny words" we say to cast a spell
--> say incantations correctly
--> prof. will write out the phonetics, put emphasis on the capitalized letters
The Verdimillious Charm: reveals objects that have been hidden by Dark magic, temporary light source; offensive spell
- pronunciation: Verdimillious (vur-duh-MILL-ee-us)
- offensive spell: shoot green sparks out of your wand, fly at your opponent and explode around them
--> opponent will feel a slight stinging sensation
~> give you time to fire another spell or leave
--> wand movement: fwd slash, end with your wand pointed at your opponent
~> MAKE SURE YOUR WAND IS POINTED AT YOUR OPPONENT, sparks will fly in the direction you point your wand
- illumination: shoot out a green light, soar to the ceiling and explode in a bright, green flash
- green light will temporarily illuminate the area and create an outline of any Dark object that is concealed
--> wand movement: circular motion above your head aimed at nothing
--> willpower: ow, more willpower can slightly extend light duration
- BE FOCUSED ON THE SPELL AND THE EFFECT YOU WANT IT TO HAVE.
The Revealing Charm: (2 different purposes) -- focus on Enchantment Revealing Charm
- tap target object and say incantation
--> Aparecium (ah-par-EH-see-um)
- focus on desired effect -- revealing hidden writing
--> push a little willpower
--> more willpower = the writing will be revealed for a slightly longer time
- two possible outcomes:
--> 1. no writing, no hidden text
--> 2. glow purple (temporary) and reveal itself for about 5 mins
- messages can be delivered using two means: purely magical means; invisible ink
- concentration: also referred to as "focus"
