Chapter 18
"Emily can I have a word?" Remus asks. I nod and move, just in time to avoid being attacked by Peeves. He takes me into a broom cupboard.
"Yeah, Professor?" I ask. Remus flinches.
"Don't call me that, not unless we're in a lesson, let's stick with Remy," he says. I nod. "So, what I wanted to talk about was earlier. On the train you said that Sirius was innocent."
"He is," I say. Remus runs his hands through his hair in despair and a tear leaves his eye. "You don't believe me."
"I...I can't, I can't Emmi," he says. "I wish I could but the betrayal stings so much! If I believe he's innocent, and then he's not, I'll end up in a bad place!"
I smile sadly at Remus. I say softly, stroking his cheek, "He's innocent. You won't go through that betrayal again."
"How can you know?" he asks. I can see his prematurely aged face form an expression of deep pain. I feel so sorry for him. He's lost all his friends... Suddenly my hand flies to my mouth.
"Merlin!" I cry. Rummaging through my pockets, I find the map that Fred and George let me have for a bit before they stopped talking to me. I open it up and scan over it. He's there. He's on there.
Peter Pettigrew.
"What?" Remus asks urgently. "What's the m- wait. Is that our map?"
"Yes," I say with a bit of impatience. I point to Peter and thrust the map in Remus's face. "Look! That traitorous rat did everything! That's why he's alive! He must have been Mum and Dad's secret keeper! He must have sold them to Voldemort! He must have then got Siri to take the blame! He's the reason you're friends are gone."
I let out a cry that is drowned out by Remus' loud howl of sadness.
"After the feast, meet me at my new office," he says. We walk out together and enter the great hall. I walk to sit by Cedric and Charlotte.
"Hey Ems," Charlotte says. "Why're you late?"
"Talking to Rem- uh, Lupin, new professor," I quickly say, blinking back the tears that are threatening to escape. One man caused so much devastation to my family.
"Oh, okay," Charlotte says. "How're you holding up? Dad says Black is after you and your brother."
"Well, he's wrong then," I say darkly. Cedric raises his eyebrows at me.
"My dad says so too," he says.
"Well my dad told me to always trust Sirius, so I know that he's innocent," I say. My friends smile at me. Not the sad smile that the Weasleys gave me, nor the completely forced one I got from Hermione. No. These smiles are proper beaming grins. They're proud of my loyalty.
"If you say he's innocent, that's enough for me," Charlotte says.
"And me," Cedric confirms. I grin at my friends.

"What's this about?" I ask Remy when I enter.
"You've taken your friends?" he asks me. I narrow my eyes at him.
"Of course," I say.
"You're so much like your father," Remus says with a small smile. He takes out a dish that I recognise as a portable pensieve. "You're going to extract your memories of Sirius and Peter."
I smile and put the tip of my wand to my forehead. I concentrate on every memory of Sirius that I have and extract them. Cedric and Charlotte stare in wonder. Remus pours them into the pensieve and we all look in
(The memories will be in capital letters and third person)
"DADDY! MUMMY! SIRI! REMY! PETEY! SEVY! LOOK! I'M AN ANIMAGUS!" YOUNG EMILY SHOUTS AS SHE TURNS INTO A WOLF AND BACK TO A HUMAN
"LOOK THERE LITTLE GIRL!" JAMES SMILES IN DELIGHT.
"YOU'RE JUST LIKE UNCA REMY," REMUS SMILES.
"DON'T KNOW WHY YOU'D WANT TO BE A WOLF, TO BE HONEST," PETER SAYS. ALL EYES TURN TO HIM. "I...ER...I MEAN."
"IT'S FINE, NO ONE WOULD WANT MY CONDITION," REMUS REASSURES THEM.
"I DIDN'T REALISE ANIMAGI WERE INHERITED TRAITS," LILY SAYS IN WONDER.
"SOME DO, SOME DON'T. GIRLS ARE MORE LIKELY TO THAN BOYS," REMUS EXPLAINS.
"Peter's first moment of betrayal of his friends," I say. "I'd forgotten I was an animagus though."
"Condition?" Charlotte asks. Remus looks at me, clearly asking if they were trustworthy. I nod.
"Werewolf," Remus says and then looks down in shame.
"Oh that's horrible!" Charlotte says. "How long?"
"I was bitten when I was four," Remus admits. We all smile sympathetically at the man. We look back into the pensieve.
"CHANGE IT! I'M TO OBVIOUS! USE PETE INSTEAD," SIRIUS BEGS JAMES AND LILY.
"FINE," LILY FINALLY RELENTS. "WE'LL USE PETER."
"I'LL GO GET HIM," SIRIUS SAYS. HE DISAPPARATES WITH A CRACK.
"MUMMY?" YOUNG EMILY CALLS FROM HER BEDROOM.
"EMILY, YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE ASLEEP," LILY GENTLY ADMONISHES THE GIRL.
"HARRY'S CRYING TO LOUD," SHE EXPLAINS. "ARE WE GOING TO BE OKAY?"
"WE'LL BE FINE," LILY SAYS, IT SOUNDS MORE TRUTHFUL THAN SHE KNOWS IT IS. "MUMMY AND DADDY WILL DO ANYTHING TO PROTECT YOU, YOU KNOW THAT RIGHT?"
YOUNG EMILY NODS.
"I think that's enough for tonight?" Remus suggests. "That does prove our suspicions though, Sirius wasn't secret keeper. He's innocent."
"I knew it!" I exclaim. "Hey, Remus?"
"Yeah?" he says warily. The full moon is clearly starting to take its toll on him.
"Can I stay with you in the shack?" I ask. "As a wolf obviously."
"It's dangerous, Emily," Remus says. That's a yes.
"Thank you!" I squeal.
"Yeah, Professor?" I ask. Remus flinches.
