Chapter 2

Lydia sat up, shaking. She had just woke up from having a nightmare.
Someone entered the room. It was Winifred. She looked surprised at Lydia's frightened face.
"Winifred! I had this most horrible dream - nightmare!" Lydia cried.
"What? What happened in it?" asked Winifred quickly.
"I was in this weird place, with vines wrapped around me. I was trying to get free, but couldn't. The vines were too thick. I tried something doing something with my hands, and I was muttering these weird words. It was like what it I did the other night! Like, magic.... Anyway, it kind of helped - what I did, well, it loosened. But suddenly this really tall lady with long black earrings and a black dress came towards me, and she did something with her hands, as well.
I got hurt because of the magic she did at me, and then I fell unconscious in the nightmare, and then I woke up. But it seemed so much scarier in the nightmare. When I explain to you about it, it doesn't seem that scary, but Winifred, it was. It was." Lydia stopped talking. She was still shaking from the nightmare, a little.
Winifred was silent. She was biting her lower lip, apparently in thought. Then she said, "I know, Lydia, that would have felt scary. I had a nightmare once, and I was scared. Are you all right though, now?"
"Yes - I think so."
"Well, let's go down. James and Lilly -" started Winifred, but Lydia interrupted her. "Winifred, just for me, can you please not tell James or Lilly about my dream?"
Winifred looked surprised, but nodded.
James suddenly appeared in the bedroom. "Uh, should we go now?"
"Yes." Winifred nodded. Then she turned to me. "Come on."
"Uh... okay."
They walked down the stairs and then went outside, where Lilly was waiting. "You took so long! What were you doing?" she snapped.
"Um, I was just talking to Lydia," said Winifred. "About.... something."
"Oh, her." Lilly did a annoyed look at Lydia. "So.... she's one of the Goldesteins?" she sniffed.
"Yes, and what's wrong with that?" Winifred glared at Lilly.
"Uh, nothing, but you do know what Queenie did -"
"Shut up!" Winifred said quickly, eyeing Lydia nervously. Then she said to Lilly in a whisper, "I don't think she knows exactly what Queenie did, so just be quiet!"
Lydia overheard this, and she said, "Yes, I know what Queenie Goldstein did, long ago. She joined Grindelwald.... but that was long, long ago."
"Yes, it was!" said Winifred briskly. "So no point worrying about it now!" She glared at Lilly, who tossed her hair and smirked.
"Are you okay?" asked Winifred, turning to Lydia. She nodded slowly.
They all started to walk slowly up the path. James turned to Lydia. "So, you're name is Lydia, right?"
Lydia nodded.
"Right."
"Hey! You guys! Look, I'm over here!"
A voice startled Lydia and the others. They turned around, to see a short plump little man waving his arms for them to come back down the path.
"Why?" asked James.
" 'Just come!" said the man. "I'm not going to do anything!"
Winifred and James exchanged looks. "Let's just follow him," said Winifred. "He looks innocent."
James nodded, and they all started to go towards the man, who said, "My name's Freddy, well, Freddy Longworth. Now you just stay here while I go in here." He pointed to a smallish barn and entered it. Then he came back leading four horses!
"Thought you might need them," said the little kind man.
"Oh, yes, we certainly do - Lilly gets tired quickly from walking and horses will be perfect! Thank you, thank you, and thank you again!" James said.
"Anytime," said Freddy, winking. Then he waved and disappeared into the barn again.
"Well, he was very generous," said Winifred.
Lydia nodded, but Lilly said, fussily, "I don't really like big horses - I'll take the smallest one." She pointed to a small spotted horse.
"Lilly! Stop being so selfish!" James said angrily. "I don't like it."
But Lilly ignored him and tried to mount the little spotted horse, but failed easily.
James groaned and went forward to help her. Soon Lilly was propped up on the horse, clutching the reins tightly and looked anxiously down at the ground.
James mounted a beautiful black friesian horse. Winifred's horse was a morgan horse, and Lydia was going to ride a pretty chestnut horse. Lydia loved riding horses - they were her favourite animal. She petted the soft neck of the chestnut horse, and let him muzzle her hand. His nose was so soft.
beauty
She mounted the pretty horse, and set to thinking what she should call it. Cedar? Yes, that would do. She petted the gentle horse again, then nudged him forward so that he was trotting. Then one certain though suddenly struck her. She hadn't asked where they were going, so she trotted quickly up to Winifred. She smiled at Lydia and asked, "What's up?"
"We didn't really finish that conversation we had last night," said Lydia.
"Oh Lydia!"
"What?"
"Didn't you even realise that you're.... you're.....magic!?" Winifred said. "I'm here to protect you, because you're magic.... you might suddenly come out of control with your magic! That's why we're all here - to protect you!"
Lydia stared at Winifred for a moment, then down at Cedar. "I am magic? But - but...." her voice faltered.
"It's okay, Lydia, really," Winifred said tenderly.
Lydia forced a smile, then cantered up ahead. One thought was in her mind. She was magic.
