Chapter 1
There has been a lot of talk recently and I mean a LOT of talk recently about house-elves. So, I thought I would honour my house-elf with a tale of his own. He deserves it. He is a free elf but chose to remain with us despite my efforts. He originally served the house of Tom Marvolo Riddle, my father, and then became house-elf to the Snape-Riddle Family, (me). I was unaware of this fact and it was only when my father and uncle died that I was able to free the house elf because I simply didn’t know he was ours.
Gert, my best friend, house-elf, tutor. He always calls me Miss Louisa, always bows and always knows the right thing to say to cheer me up.
Every wizarding family has their own way of teaching their children before they start at Hogwarts and you would think that my uncle, as a professor was more than capable of doing the job. This wasn’t the case. Instead I had Gert. He taught me how to read, write and count, obviously this wasn’t my only source of learning but it was the main one. When I lived at Hogwarts, he used his elvish magic to be with me and apparated around the castle or to Arber. It wasn’t hard and it meant that I was protected. He made sure that I was fed, that I had clothes, and that I had every skill needed. In effect, along with my uncle and my professors, he brought me up. He certainly would not like for me to say that but he did.
He still calls me Miss Louisa, I guess it is habit, and we treat him as part of the family. Everyone who comes to us knows that they must treat him with the same respect we do. When I was able to free Gert I hoped that he was going to live a good life and he just thanked me and carried on as usual. I asked him what he was doing and he just pointed out that now he was doing all of this as a Free elf. It was nice, but a little strange.
He now is able to say that he is a free-elf for the Snape-Weasley family or just Weasley family. He does the work because he enjoys it and has nothing else to do. He also socialises with people at the Leaky Cauldron sometimes and we make sure he is well taken cared of.
Gert I love you. Thank you for everything you have ever done for me. If I haven’t said it before I’ll say it again. You are the best.
