Defending us

Chapter 3
I was called in the same way my mother was called. We were never Death Eaters; we were never given a mark. We were simply called to the meeting point. For me it was Malfoy Manor. I spoke in parceltongue frequently with my father and Nagini. In the early days I found it hard to adapt. My Uncle would rein me in. By now we had our own way of dealing with matters that got out of hand. Just one look and I knew.

It wasn’t until I started thinking about it, talking it over that I considered the implications of what we did. I was in the company of a man that looked after and cared for me, Uncle Severus. But I was also in the company of a man that thought he was going to bring me up with his wife, and perhaps siblings, in a world that he had created for us. At the time this didn’t mean anything to me but as I reflect on it, I can see now how it was. He was jealous that Severus Snape had been able to spend so much time with HIS daughter and yet he and missed so much. He didn’t know my quirks; he didn’t know that it was difficult being around Nagini and not transfigure.

Sometimes we would spend time, just the two of us. Just talking, not talking, it didn’t matter. I suppose I was simply trying to work him out and perhaps he was trying to do the same. At the time of the Battle of Hogwarts quite a few people knew that he was my father. I would like to say that we had a good relationship but I doubt that is fair. We had a good enough relationship for him to know that I wouldn’t take sides. He knew that I was in a “no-mans land” caught in the “space between”. When he killed my Uncle, no words were exchanged between us. I couldn’t. He understood all too well what I felt.

That is what love is really, that is what love does between a father and his daughter. You can have the darkest wizard as your father but at the end of the day he is still your father and you still love him unconditionally. Always.
