Different Years
Chapter 2
I remember the first year Harry stayed for Christmas because that year Mr and Mrs Weasley went to visit Charlie in Romania. My routine over the holidays was completely different to usual because I was able to hang out with Fred, George, Harry and Ron. Mrs Weasley gave us all jumpers for Christmas which was great because the year before I had a scarf and before that gloves. I was basically getting fitted out with the whole kit, I also had some fudge which I took down to share with my uncle. My colour was bright red. I didn’t care what colour it was.
The fact that I had been given a gift was more than enough for me. We played games all day, I dragged Fred and George off on a dungeon tour with Peeves maintaining a constant presence and then at the feast I decided it would be nice to pull my cracker with my uncle. He generally tries to keep out of the way of this sort of thing but as there were very few people, he accepted the offer and I was allowed to pull a cracker with him. Such fun! It sounds like not very much to many people but to us it was everything. Percy kept up the pretence he didn’t enjoy it too but I know he did.
I’ve also spent Christmases being quite ill. In my 6th year I spent Christmas at 12 Grimmuald Place with Sirius, Tonks, the Weasleys, Harry, Hermione, Mad-eye and Lupin. Sirius worked really hard to make it a really special Christmas for everyone after the terrible summer and Mrs Weasley practically force-fed me under strict instructions from Mme Pomfrey and my Uncle, who also dropped in to pay a visit. I had to eat more or less constantly all throughout the holidays, due to my various diets, and I just about managed to eat some sausages and a mince pie. It really was a mad house and it was one of the first times that I had experienced Christmas outside of Hogwarts Arthur and I were really quite poorly but we found that small blessings happen with the greatest of surprises.
Life became complicated for a while. Christmas ’97 – the dark year, so many people were just trying to keep away from snatchers and Voldemort that I think we forgot about Christmas. Ironically that’s the year I remember the most. That year I had my family. All of it. I went to the Weasleys then to Malfoy Manor. I spent time with everyone, Uncle, Father… I’m surprised I didn’t get splinched the amount of times I apparated. Hogwarts was not a place you could usually apparate in and out of but this was a strange time and I had … permission.
These days when I think of Christmas it is a very different affair. I spend a lot of time working on Midwinter and then Christmas day I spend with my family. It takes a lot of energy out of me. I want to make sure that as children go off to school that they always come back. I was very lucky to have my uncle as a Professor and I often overlook that fact. I hope Christmas is as celebrated in the years to come.
