Kings Cross Conundrum

Written by: Rowan Blackclaw

Edited by: Shelby Hastings

Early Monday morning, several Ministry employees rushed to the infamous Kings Cross station to undo the damage caused by a small group of unidentified wizard activists. The incident took place around 8:00 AM, when several witnesses reported seeing too young muggles, accompanied by a small group of wizards, attempt to use the entrance to platform 9 ¾. The Wizards were seen performing spells and charms for the young boys, and providing them with wizarding candies, such as Chocolate Frogs and Whizzing Whizbees. Next the group attempted to persuade the children to use the entrance to the Platform. Thankfully, the children were too timid to leave with the strange Wizards, and were soon reunited with their unobservant parents, thus temporarily halting the Wizard’s mischievous actions. This train station train-wreck, was witness by a number of muggles in the area. Fortunately the Ministry has placed several memory modification spells in the area, and hope to have the memory cleared in a few days time.

“This is when things go out of hand,” says head of magical reversal team Robert Howard. “The suspects began drawing attention to themselves, drawing in more muggles to witness the magic. They began casting the Verdimillious spell into the air, and startling many nearby muggles. Fortunately, Ministry member Ember Lee, spotted the illegal activities and took action. Lee apprehended the railroad renegades and pursued them through the crowd as they began to flee. Fortunately, Lee was able to subdue one of the wizards, who is now being questioned in Azkaban. So far all the interrogators has been able to uncover, is that a group called the MAM (Muggle Awareness Movement) is believed to be involved. For her quick thinking and brave actions, Auror Lee will be presented special honors from the Minister of Magic himself.

The MAM is an activist group set on exposing the wizarding world to the Muggles. It is one of their main beliefs that neither community may prosper, while one is ignorant of the other. Their beliefs date back to the Stone Age, when Muggle and Magical communities once co-existed. The MAM usually targets young muggle children, because they are most likely to believe what they witness whereas, adult muggles are more likely to dismiss the truth in favor of conforming to the rest of societies normal behaviors. The MAM has struck before, usually posing as muggle magicians, (a muggle form of illusionment) they often slip real magic into their routines. This process is believed to create a buffer space between the child's ability to recognize what is real, and what is an illusion. Once exposed, the child begins to be more vulnerable to the effects magic, and be more accepting when they do witness magic.

The young muggles are currently residing at St. Mungos, awaiting the modification of their memories. Expert Healer Fiona Baxter spoke with us shortly after the muggles arrived. “We are not sure how to deal with them” says Baxter, “they seem to somehow be protected from mind modification spells. It seems as though whoever attacked them, wanted them to remember. What we do know, is that whoever was responsible, is very powerful, and will certainly cause the Ministry quite a lot of trouble. St. Mungo’s very best healer, Mary Ann Butler, has been assigned their treatment, with the aid of memory modification spells expert Garrick Olsen. Olsen tells our reporters, “I am quite confident, that both myself, and Mrs. Butler, are quite capable of handling this particular predicament.”

Platform 9 ¾ is currently under lockdown while Ministry Officials review evidence and question witnesses.

WANTED: IF YOU SEE THIS WIZARD CONTACT THE MINISTRY OF MAGIC IMMEDIATELY. THIS WIZARD IS WANTED FOR CONSPIRING TO MAKE MUGGLES AWARE. WIZARD IS OF AVERAGE BUILD, APPROXIMATELY 177.8 cm (5’10’’) LIGHT BROWN HAIR. UNKNOWN EYE COLOR. LAST SEEN WEARING A LIGHT BLUE TRENCH COAT OVER A BROWN SUIT. REWARD 1,000 GALLEONS

Honey Dukes : The Old and New Written by: Anmol Irfan

Edited by: Denise Crume

As I write I'm staring at a bar of the world's finest chocolate. Yup you guessed it: Honeydukes, the place where everyone's sweet dreams come true. So knowing the sweet tooth y'all have I figured you'd be interested in knowing that Honeydukes is now open once again and with a whole new look. To those who like to stick with the classics , fear not for everything we know and love is still available . Of course some we love more than others. Blood flavoured lollipops and cockroach clusters are always the ones that sell out the slowest (but then again, there's no accounting for tastes is there?) while everyone's favourites pepper imps and sugar quills fly off the shelves (probably not literally). For 2 knuts you can by special edible ink ( or what seems like ink) with the sugar quills, and trust me the combination is divine. Pepper imps are facing their latest rival in the form of caramel gnomes . Yes, actual miniature gnomes which will bite you if not eaten fast enough and while the bite isn't dangerous it will leave the bitten area tasting of caramel for a good 12 hours. The choco balls are bigger then ever before with new flavoured fillings ranging from crunchy peanut butter to creamy earthworm.

art by Joanna Quinn

Although I can bet that the former will sell a lot more compared to the latter. An old classic that remains as good as ever is a box of Bertie Bott's Every Flavoured Beans so don't miss that on your next visit. However I would advise you to stay away from the acid pops as the ratio of acid : actual candy just got a whole lot scarier... In a special interview with Mr and Mrs Ambrosius Flume, I soon discovered that the reason why Honeydukes opened later than the other shops was to allow the creation of a vast array of new items as well as improvements in the old ones. Mr Flume also mentioned that he himself comes up with each and every idea that is visible in the shop that is truly one of a kind. However I do have some bad news for you guys; after running the shop for 59 years , Mr and Mrs Flume have finally decided to retire next year, but being without an heir the question remains: will Honeydukes remain open or will the sweetness of Hogsmeade be shut down forever?

The Hogwarts Buddy Project

Written by: Audrey Watson

Edited by: Ellie Pelto

Everyone was a new student at one point in time, so everyone knows just how disorienting and confusing it can be to try to navigate oneself through the virtual halls of Hogwarts. The enrollment process can be a bit overwhelming, and questions about just how to do things at HiH are a common topic on the feeds. It was with this in mind that the Hogwarts Buddy Project was created.

Originally a Gryffindor-only project started by Nayelle Antlers, the system was created to “...help the new Gryff students to get to know their house and housemates!” The idea is simple: each new student (a “Cub” in the original version) gets paired up with an older student mentor (called a “Pawtner”). The new pair would be matched on factors such as time zone, age group, and interests, and were instructed to maintain contact with one another. Essentially, this gave the new student a direct link to someone that could help with whatever question the Cub may have.

The idea spread, and soon each house had its own respective versions of the mentorship project. The individual houses’ projects are thriving, each with their own large amounts of both new students and older mentors. Ashley Silver (The Ferret) of the Hufflepuff Honey Badger Hollow says, “It’s been helping newer students learn the ropes of the site and helping to make new friends at the same time.”

The project is also doing well on the green side of the castle, according to Ashley Snape of the Slytherin Ankle Biter Project. She says, “I have gotten many owls thanking me for the mentors and help and everyone seems to be doing very well.”

Not long after the individual houses were created, Nayelle created an alternate version to her original project. The Hogwarts Buddy Project – an inter-house mentorship programme “... to try and get the houses mingling again!” The mentors (Buddies) and new student (Owlets) are matched up just as they were before, but this time with members of other houses. This is intended to spread inter-house unity and peace (something we could all use a bit more of nowadays).

Regardless of whether a new student signs up for the individual house mentorship programme or the inter-house one, it is clear they will learn a lot and do well having a personal mentor. It is a great way to make friends and learn more about the site, whether as an older student or an ickle firstie.

You can find a list of all the respective house projects compiled here http://hogwartsishere.com/forums/discussion/999584/

Divine Divinations: Cartomancy

Written by: Luna Alexander

Edited by: Hazel Cunningham

As many students begin their Year 2 studies, Divine Divinations reaches its final topic of discussion. We will be taking divination with Professor Rebecca Black, and there is much more to learn about the art of divining.

The final divination method I'll be covering is cards - tarot cards, playing cards, oracle cards and all other means of card divination. Tarot is by far the most popular card method, and just like the crystal ball, is the most widely depicted. Divination with cards is referred to as cartomancy. It is one of the oldest forms of divination introduced into the wizarding community in Europe during the 14th century. Like a deck of playing cards, tarot has four suits as well as a set of cards known as the major arcana. Each has a distinct representation and meaning, as depicted in different types of spreads. The spreads are how a seer or reader lays out the cards - there are different spreads for different situations. Some as simple as one card or three cards. And some readers go through a full deck in one reading.

Similarly, readers can use a deck of playing cards. In English speaking countries, a standard deck of 52 cards is used. In France, they use a smaller 32 card deck. The main spread for a deck of playing cards is called the Wheel of Fortune. This is when a reader randomly selects cards and the meaning is determined on when each card is drawn.

Oracle cards are a more simplistic form of cartomancy - spreads can be used, but more commonly cards are drawn one at a time or in a set of three. They do not have suits, and are generally themed - anything from faeries to angels, steampunk to ancient cultures. Each set comes with a booklet which explains the meanings behind each card. Some draw a card each day to help them plan out their day or make decisions for the road ahead.

Quite like runes, the cards - any set of cards - can be used to answer questions or provide a general overview of what is yet to transpire. Unlike the Ouija board, cards are not ruled by poltergeists but are based more on chance and random happenstance. They can be a powerful tool for guidance as well as a seemingly impressive method for muggles to attempt magic. Decks of tarot and oracle cards can be bought at many major muggle bookstores.

Quidditch Cup Semi Showdown

Written by: Rubi Vargas

Edited by: Denise Crume

The semi-finals had been Bulgaria v. Japan and Brazil v. America, all of which were notable world powers. Though there was fear that the competition would instigate the Second Quidditch War, what with the Inferi attack and the kidnapping of Hans, the semis went rather smoothly with next to no discord or severe threats.

Many fans placed absurdly high bets on America (one man going as far as to try to place the deed to his house as a bet, though he was not permitted to do so) since their recent winning streak, a notable accomplishment for a country not as invested in Quidditch, boded well. Therefore, fans expected a swift and stunning defeat against the Brazilians. However, the match was ongoing for roughly two days, at the end of which Brazil emerged victorious, 420 to 310.

Bulgaria's match against Japan was a high-anticipated showdown as hundreds of Quidditch fans were eager to see Bulgaria advance to the finals now that Victor Krum had returned as their Seeker. Despite the constant remarks of his age and how beneficial it would have been to allow a younger player to play, Krum was determined to win the Cup for his country at least once in his lifetime. It was an honorable commitment on his part, a choice which many Quidditch fans could respect. Most Quidditch players retire early, usually in their thirties either due to injuries or to relinquish their positions to younger players.

The match was nerve-wracking to watch and Healers dashed between the stadium to the audience, attending to wounded players and fans suffering from panic attacks. Most notable was the incident in which Bulgarian Beater, Boris Vulchanov, dove in front of an oncoming Bludger to defend Krum and allow him to reach the Snitch. Vulchanov was knocked out cold, though he was quickly saved by Japanese Seeker, Noriko Sato. Despite his advantage, Krum pulled up and did not pursue the Snitch since Sato could not. Once Vulchanov recovered, all three players received a standing ovation for demonstrating good sportsmanship. In the tenth hour, Krum managed a spectacular capture of the Snitch, securing Bulgaria's victory with 610 to 460.

Bulgaria will go on to face Brazil in the finals, while Japan will face America for third place.

Ask Ivy! Lavender Lemonade

Written by: Ivy Nettlebed

Edited by: Shelby Hastings

Could your mixing charm use some work? Is your house elf on vacation? Then it’s time to Ask Ivy!

Hello again dear readers! Fortunately for me, Tiggy, my house elf, is not on vacation so we get to test these great summer recipes together. Tiggy reminded me when we received this recipe that she does not like anything that tastes like flowers however, after a little persuasion, I was able to get her to try it. House elves can be quite stubborn you know!

The results were amazing! Big thanks to our reader Kasey Buffington for sending us an owl with the recipe for this refreshing beverage. Tiggy gives it her stamp of approval and we hope you will too!

Lavender Lemonade

(Original author unknown)

Makes 6-8 glasses depending on how diluted one makes it.

Ingredients:

5 tablespoons culinary lavender

1 1/2 cups of lemon juice (about 9 good sized lemons)*

2 cups boiling water

2 cups cold water

2/3 cups sugar

-Bring 2 cups of water to a rolling boil in a saucepan (add a bit more if too much has evaporated)

-Add lavender to boiling water and let steep for 15 minutes

-Strain lavender 'tea' and discard the used herb into trash or compost pile

-Stir sugar and lavender until sugar has dissolved

-Stir in lemon juice

-Stir in cold water

-Add water until desired balance of sweet and tart is achieved

-Serve over ice and enjoy!

This really is a great drink and the lavender leaves a very calming effect. If done correctly, it should have a pale purple tint in its color.

*If one cannot get a hold of bottled lemon juice or does not have a juicer, there is an easy way to squeeze lemons by hand. Roll the lemons on a hard, clean surface until they feel squishy. Rolling the lemons loosens the fibers from the peels and allows the juice to flow more freely. Cut the lemons in half, or have an adult cut them if you cannot, and gently squeeze the lemons through a strainer into a bowl or cup. The strainer is important because there are a lot of seeds! Make sure to wash your hands or wear clean kitchen gloves.

Quidditch Cup Finales

Written by: Rubi Vargas

Edited by: Denise Crume

The match for the highly coveted bronze medal was Japan versus America, which was one of the bloodiest matches this year. It was scarcely the first half hour of the match when American Chaser, Arsenia Gonzalez, received two Bludgers in the face. All players from both sides played admirably, ending with a spectacular Snitch catch by Japanese Seeker, Noriko Sato. The match ended with Japan winning, 330 to 120. The Americans accepted their defeat gracefully, embracing the Japanese team and exchanging congratulations. The Japanese team presented the American team with a Hoo-hoo, a Japanese firebird, as a gift (as well as a reference to American fans kidnapping Hans the Augurey). The Hoo-hoo was named Hikaru Goku McHooty Rogers, or simply Hikaru for short.

The final match was reported by the Daily Prophet, live as it happened. Rumors say that Rita Skeeter was one of the Prophet writers present, along with Ginny Potter, who has been reporting on the Cup since the opening ceremony. However, we here at The Quibbler were indeed present, but the report was misplaced due to Wrackspurts, and was not found until now:

The team mascots are coming out to give their respective performances. The Bulgarian Veelas are typically popular among men while the Brazilian Curupiras are popular among children. The Veelas perform a dance routine as usual, though I'm sure that the planned flash mob by the Inferi would have been far more interesting. The Curupiras are doing a series of acrobatics, though I'm sure the Inferi could have accomplished a similar performance.

00.00 hrs- The players kick off! Let the 427th annual Quidditch Cup final begin!

00.05 hrs- Brazil has possession. Though Bulgarian Beaters Draganov and Vulchanov are on the defensive, but Brazilian Chasers Diaz, Flores, and Alonso persist! Allons-y, Alonso!

00.32 hrs- Bulgarian Chaser Levski takes possession! Oh! Bludger in the face, oh God, that's gotta hurt. She's dropped the Quaffle, which is now in Flores' hands.

00.37 hrs- GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!! Goal from Flores! I repeat, goal from Flores!

00.42 hrs- Dragonov and Vulchanov providing a solid defense. Bulgaria is on the defense. Another Quaffle drop from Chaser Grozda.

00.59 hrs- GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLL! GOOAALLLASO!! Levski scores, resulting in an even ten-ten!

01.23 hrs- GOAL DE BRASIL! Brazil manages to score three more times, putting them in a good lead. Not that they should get cocky just yet. The Snitch has yet to be sighted.

01.43 hrs- The Snitch has been sighted by the Brazilian hoops! Krum and Silva, neck to neck, weaving through past the other players, will they make it? Soaring upwards, the Snitch reaches towards the Sun, blinding both Seekers and managing to slip away.

02.03 hrs- The score is now 60 to 20 with Brazil still in the lead. Ouch! Beater Santos hits Krum on the back of the head with his bat. The game has been paused. Will Bulgaria be awarded a penalty?

02.21 hrs- German referee, Herman Junker, concludes that Santos didn't mean to hit Krum. Krum signals that he is fit to continue playing.

02.38 hrs- Krum and Silva shoot upwards as the Snitch has been sighted! Silva is ahead by a few feet, but Krum is gaining.

02.43 hrs- Krum and Silva are neck in neck. The crowd is panicking. The players are panicking. I'M PANICKING! Afueriobfuerndoife (undefinable scribbles due to muscle spasms).

02.45 hrs- KRUM HAS CAUGHT THE SNITCH! BULGARIA WINS!!!! 170 TO 60!

The crowd and reporters alike are cheering. THIS IS A MOMENTOUS OCCASION! KRUM IS IN TEARS, HIS DREAM NOW A REALITY! AND GUESS WHO JUST WON HERSELF A BRAND NEW THUNDERBOLT!? THIS GIRL! AWW, YEAH...I mean, um, yes, crowds are cheering and both teams are landing to congratulate each other for a well played game. Huh, did Ginny Potter just jinx Rita Skeeter? Awesome, this day in the Patagonian Desert cannot get any better. Now I must go collect my new Thunderbolt. Good thing I bet on Bulgaria.

In short, the Quidditch Cup came to a spectacular end. All teams played admirably, though Bulgaria has taken home the gold. The celebrations are wild, akin to that of the Americans after their victory over Lichtenstein.

In related news, congratulations to Germany for winning the Fifa World Cup (a competition of soccer/futbol, which is one of the few Muggle sports that's actually good). An epic and well-deserved win. A 1-0 victory against Argentina, who played well too. Great job, Argentina. Additionally, the Netherlands snagged third place after a decisive match against Brazil. To the Netherlands, I say one thing, and one thing only. No era penal.

Article Title: A New Day, A New Hogwarts
Written by: Shelby Hastings
Edited by: Rowan Blackclaw

A new day has come for us as a school and for many it is a huge change. Recently, there was major drama. This resulted in academics being put on hold, mad confusion, a mix of emotions, and many of our professors leaving. This also led to the site creator, Keith Cardin, to fire all professors. The professors did have a choice on staying or leaving their positions.

We bid a heartfelt farewell to these professors: Professor Naya Nivera-Darkstorm: former Potions teacher and Hufflepuff HoH, Professor Henrick Darkstorm: former Transfiguration teacher and Ravenclaw HoH, Professor Lillian Mae: former Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher and Gryffindor HoH, and Professor Rose Wolfe, former Potions teacher, Madame Mae: former DADA teacher, Professor Astreal Hunt, and Professor Stone. As a result of their resignations, courses are being redone.

Due to the courses being redone, we have new professors. We bid welcome to Professor Melanie Silvers (DADA), Professor Lucrezia Batyaeva (Potions), and Professor Emmerich Prince (Transfiguration). We also would like to bid welcome to our new staff. The new deputy headmaster and Gryffindor HoH is Professor August Rubedo. The new Hufflepuff HoH is Professor Genesis Starfight. The new Ravenclaw HoH is Professor Alex Quilmane. The new Slytherin HoH is Professor Rebecca Black.

One of the most common results of this drama was mixed emotions. This was due mainly to our beloved professors leaving. One student, Adelaide Asman, shared her emotions.

“I came onto HiH around ten the morning… I found the site in despair, as status after status was posted, voicing their opinions and feelings about the situation. Wondering what had happened, I went to multiple places to find out… I found out that some of Hogwarts' greatest professors had quit; I was honestly shocked at first, but not surprised. A lot of people had been expecting something like this, and I was one of them…I didn't want to say goodbye to Professors Darkstorm, Stone, Wolfe, Nivera, Mae…Professor Hunt and Madame Mae….After they deserted their classes, the new professors started walking in. I didn't like how they just emailed Keith and said, "I'll take over so and so position." I liked the application process that they had. I wanted professors that were ready to fill in their shoes. I welcomed the new professors, but I was disappointed in two of the professors' new curriculum. However, I learned to put that aside and get on with life, but I still missed learning about the Class-A spells and Gamp's Laws, and all the spells that were taught in the first round of DADA…I commend them on how quickly they are getting these new lessons up, and how nice they are. They are great professors in their own way…Now, I am accustomed to having the new professors, but I still remember the old ones, and I will always remember them in my memory, forever and ever.”

Miss Asman also goes on to talk about how some of the students reacted.
“Many [students] left due to the drama. Many started up more drama. Many kept their mouth shut. We all have different ways on viewing that day.”
She ended her testimony by saying, “…remember, that day closed one chapter and started a new one. We are looking into the horizon and seeing a new path. We can change HiH around. Don't forget this day, as a fellow student is already doing. Remember 7/23.”

As you look through the feed, do try to remain positive. Read and take in what our professors are saying. Share your #HiHPositivity.

July 23rd, 2014 was one of the toughest days for us. But, as a school, we will get through this.

“When you believe you have reached the end, that will be the beginning.”
