Not There...
Chapter 8
//////this one's really long sorry/////
There were torches on the walls and a ceiling so high Harry thought that Sirius would've held a Quidditch match here. The torches helped dry off Harry's robes slightly but not much. Harry had halfway dried his pink hair making it a bit poofy and even more wild than before. He had lost his glasses in the lake so he kept tripping over other people's feet and stumbling over his own.
"Ow!"
"Sorry, sorry" Harry mumbled to a shorter brown frizzy haired girl. "Don't have my glasses. They uh, fell into the lake..."
The brown haired girl smiled softly. "Oh, that was you. I'm sorry, here, I know a spell that will dry you off." she waved her wand over Harry's robes and murmmered something under her breath. "Hogwarts hasn't even started!" Harry said in awe. "How can you do that already?" the girl just laughed and tucked her wand away into her robes. "A few books. My names Hermione Granger, what's yours?" Harry couldn't see her face, everything was to blurry, but he guessed that she was smiling so he replied with. "Harry, Harry Potter." Hermione grinned (as far as Harry could see) "Isn't your Father an Auror? I've read the lastest Daily Prophet and it had an-" Hermione was cut off as Professor McGonagall walked out.
"Welcome, first year students." McGonagall said in a stiff voice, scanning the small crowd of children in the hall. "You will soon be sorted into your house. There is Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin." McGonagall pursed her lips as she said 'Slytherin'. "These houses will act as your home during the school year. If you break any rules house points will be taken away, you will earn house points by completing school work and excelling in class. I will be back shortly."
Everyone had started talking excitedly after McGonagall left leaving Harry alone in silence. That is until the blond boy from the train walked up to him and held out a hand. "I don't think we've been formally introduced. I'm Draco, Draco Malfoy." Harry’s mouth dropped open, but he closed it, deciding it would be rude. “Really?" Draco smiled shyly. "Really. Just please be a bit more quiet please I don't like it much when people stare." Harry nodded. "Sorry." he dropped his voice. "Are you really the Boy Who Lived? Do you have the scar?" Harry could remember James and Lily telling him about the Boy Who Lived when he was younger. "Yea, I do..." Draco whispered back and lifted his robe sleeve. On his
pale wrist there was a long lighting shaped scar. "That's wicked..." Harry breathed. He realized how stupid he was being gawking at someone over a scar so Harry looked back up at Draco's blurry face (his glaces were needed).
McGonagall came in as Harry and Draco finished talking about their favorite Quidditch teams. "We are ready for you." she said and led the first years into the hall. Draco and Harry walked into the Great Hall together.
The word "Wow." was whispered around the students as everyone saw the floating candles and the star-y sky. "It's not really the sky the ceilings just enchanted to look like that." Harry heard what he guessed was Hermione from before say. Draco leaned towards Harry. "Does it really have an enchantment on it?" Harry nodded excitedly. "Yep, dad told me about it! He said that him and Uncle Sirius tested it."
"How would they test it? Humans are definitely not tall enough to reach-" McGonagall started talking to the first years again, standing next to a grimy hat. The hat moved slightly and started to sing.
"Oh you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me."
Draco took a step back, looking at the hat like it was going to reach out and attack him. Harry had to hold back a laugh as the hat continued.
"You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.
There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.
You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;"
"Try and get in Gryffindor okay Draco? That's where I'm going." Harry whispered.
"You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;"
"I thought it was the hat the decided where you go?" Draco asked confused.
"Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
if you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;"
"Gryffindor runs in my family. That's how it works most of the time." Draco nodded slowly. "Okay then."
"Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folks use any means
To achieve their ends.
So put me on! Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap!
You're in safe hands (though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap!"
The hall started clapping but died down when McGonagall got out a list. "When I say your name come up and put on the Sorting Hat." she said and looked down at the list. "Potter, Harry." Harry took a beep breath and Draco nudged him forward. Slowly, Harry walked up to the hat, witch now looked a little sinister. He pick up the hat, sat on the stool and put it on. Harry's eyes were covered and he could feel people looking at him.
'Hm yes yes quite brave...' Harry bit his lip as the hat started talking in his ear. Remus had told him about this part, and Harry didn't like it at all. 'But very loyal to the ones close to you. Not Ravenclaw, no offence but you don't have much wit-' Harry gave a metal sigh. 'I knew that, please just get this over with.' Harry told the Sorting hat. 'Oh you would be wonderful in Slytherin...' Harry began to panic. What would Sirius and James say if he was put in Slytherin? 'No not there, not Slytherin!' Harry told the hat. 'Not Sytherin okay... then what house should you be in? You, Harry Potter, are very complicated, very brave but your loyalty is amazing. You would do best in HUFFLEPUFF!"
Harry felt awful. Lily was going to be annoyed with him for not being in Gryffindor Sirius and Remus would be happy that he even got into a house and James... would be James.
"Abbot Hannah!" McGonagall called as Harry sat down at the table of cheering Hufflepuff's. A few minutes later Hannah was also sorted into Hufflepuff. Harry tired to cheer and clap with the others but wasn't in the mood.
About 13 students later "Malfoy, Draco!" was said by McGonagall. The hall went silent before whispers broke out. "Draco Malfoy?" "It is really The Boy Who Lived?" "There's a Malfoy here!" "A Malfoy in our year!" Draco crossed his arms nervously and walked up to the hat. Right as it touched his head the hat yelled "SLYTHERIN!"
Harry pouted. Nether of them had gotten the houses that they wanted. Draco walked over to the cheering Slytherin's, grinning. He glanced at Harry and gave a small shrug and a look that said 'sorry'. Harry shrugged back and waved a hand as if to say 'it's fine.'
