Pure Nothingness
Chapter 1
Small towns usually never have any action. The quaint village of Upper Harmony, Virginia is proof of this. Or at least, it was proof of this.
Upper Harmony was one of those towns that exuded warmth. The houses were all unique, painted in pinks, yellows, and blues. Rose bushes sprouted all over, and there was barely a weed on any lawn. There were a few supermarkets and a church or two, as well as barber shops, restaurants, and a local school, with the farmer's market opening up every Saturday. The buzzing and beeping noises of the city were replaced by twittering birds. Everyone knew almost everybody. You're required to in a village with only about one hundred people. Indeed, the entire small town of Upper Harmony was slower, quieter, and ultimately much more peaceful than the cities, but the citizens liked it that way. When you took your first step into the little suburb, you could take a deep breath of the fresh air and relax. Or, at least, until the Rift appeared.
On Ivory Road, old Mr. Pellis drove in his rickety 1971 Chevrolet C10, its once gleaming teal paint now scratched and dirty. The engine made sputtering noises, wheezing and coughing. Mr. Pellis was heading for MacMurphy's Auto Repair Shop, an untidy, yet welcoming business that always smelled distinctly of oil. The radio was spewing out old classics from the seventies, as Mr. Pellis smiled a toothy grin. He hummed along with the radio, waving to the people who were taking walks on the sidewalks. Mr. Pellis was a beloved member of the community, formerly the mayor until he decided to have more time with his wife and children. He put hours into community service, even in his later years. It was simply another day in Upper Harmony. And then, the Rift opened up directly in front of the old truck and its driver.
Without any warning, a little piece of reality seemed to be torn apart. It looked like a humungous rip in a piece of cloth or a sudden crack in a wall of stone. But inside the hole was nothing. The empty space seemed to expel any air or matter. It was like a door, a door that did not lead to the other side, but a different plane of existence, where there was an absence of reality. There was no color in this void, only a deep and uncaring black storm. The Chevrolet and Mr. Pellis were launched into this empty void. Screams were heard, then they were suddenly stopped. Noise needs matter to exist. But, the moment the old man and his car flew into this rift in space, they disintegrated into nothingness, every single atom fading away. Just like the hellish world they had been so abruptly put into.
Gasps were heard, and everyone on Ivory Road rushed over to look at this horrifying and strange crack in reality, but as soon as Mr. Pellis and his dirty Chevrolet dissolved in this pool of nullity, it vanished. Reality went back to normal. It was as if Mr. Pellis never existed, but everyone remembered him. Some rubbed their eyes in fright, trying ever so desperately to deny the thing that they just saw. After all, it was preposterous to suggest that someone had been erased from existence. But what they saw was all true. The people were in a state of panic. What would they say if they called 911? They couldn't do that, no one would believe it. Only about five people had actually seen it. Everyone seemed to just stand there, waiting futilely to see if the Rift would open once more. It wouldn't, or at least, not in the same place
It took quite a while for Mrs. Pellis to understand what had happened. She initially laughed at a whole flock of her friends coming up to her and telling her that her husband just disappeared into space. But, as the witnesses started to become more insistent upon what they saw, she decided to go out onto Ivory Street, just to ensure she was right that this was just some joke. It took two hours before she broke out into tears. The look of swelling pain and sadness on her usually cheery face was painful to look at. For the next day, all in Upper Harmony wore black. A funeral service was held, though several were still confused. The eulogy was sweet, and a deep depression fell over his remaining family. Even in this slow town, everything became much, much slower.
So, there was a new headstone in the Upper Harmony Cemetery. The cemetery was about a mile away, far away from the actual town of Upper Harmony. People picked flowers from their rose bushes to shower on his grave. The gravestone loomed a sadly empty coffin, buried deep in the ground of a cursed village. The stone read: "Jacob Pellis: May 24, 1955 - May 2, 2018" So, everyone decided to keep quiet about what they called 'The Pellis Incident'.
One month passed, and the people of Upper Harmony decided to bury the unfortunate accident deep in their minds. The birds began to tweet again, and the cut roses started to grow back. Some even doubted that this so-called rift in reality had occured. A few started to believe that Mr. Pellis was simply an illusion and his death had been a mental mechanism that acted to erase the illusion in their minds. It was all crazy, but no more insane than someone dissolving in an empty void of nothing. People gave Mrs. Pellis visits from time to time, but it was clear that her husband's absence had left a major toll on her mentally. Sometimes, she would mumble in her sleep, possibly dreaming, talking to her now deceased spouse. Those moments of sleep talking were the only reasons she smiled anymore. However, day by day, she accepted her life and got better.
But, Upper Harmony was not finished with the Rift in Reality. Not yet.
