Chapter 14
There were so many loose ends I couldn’t even keep track of it. And Josh seemed to be the only one with answers. “If there’s no legacy, what’s going on here?” I asked. We were still in the helicopter, but I had forgotten about being cold. Now I was scared out of my mind. The one person I knew I could always trust had turned out to be working for the enemy after all. And Josh, who was supposed to be against me, seemed to sincerely want to help.
“What do you mean by legacy?” Josh asked.
“The one Uncle Ben told us about!”
“Whatever he said was most likely a lie. I’ve seen him around my house talking to Dad and planning ways to find and catch you.”
“But in my dream, Uncle Ben came to find me. He was going to protect me.”
“No. Monarch let your parents go because they knew they would go to Ben. Ben assured them he would help you, but he really just needed to know where you were. Now I bet he’s gone to Monarch to tell them we’re here.”
“We can’t leave yet, I still have too many questions.”
“We don’t have long, Robin,” Josh warns me, but he seems to understand that I won’t go anywhere with him until all my questions are answered.
“Why does Monarch want me?”
“For your dream powers. They think they can harness them if they catch you.”
“Oh,” I whisper, shocked. It did make sense, and all this was less confusing than some crazy story Uncle Ben made up.
“But I had a dream where they talked about the legacy.”
“It was probably staged. My dad is thorough. If he wanted you to believe something, he would do anything to make you believe it.”
“Let me get this straight,” Skylar says, stepping forward. She had been listening silently to our conversation. “Monarch wants Robin for her dream powers. Robin’s parents framed Robin for the murder of Henry Dales so that she would go to jail and be safe from Monarch. Robin escaped the police, came to stay with me, and started having these dreams. Monarch captured Robin’s parents so that Robin would be worried about them, but then Monarch let them go so they would go to Uncle Ben and tell him everything. Then Uncle Ben, who is actually not on our side, came to find Robin. He told her about the legacy that actually doesn’t exist, and now he’s going to tell Monarch where we are.”
Josh nodded and almost smiled. “Sounds about right.”
Skylar turned to me. “What have you gotten yourself into Robin?”
