Chapter 12
We walked up to the front door as I wondered if Josh really was following me. Mrs. Jane took out her keys, but before she could unlock the door, Mr. Mark pulled it open from the inside. He didn’t seem to know what to think of us. The expression on his face was mixed with guilt and fear and anger.
“Dad, are you okay?” Skylar asked.
Instead of responding to his daughter, he just opened the door wider and stepped to the side so we could walk in. As soon as we rounded the corner into the living room, I saw the police officer. My throat tightened. I could barely breathe. Skylar, Mrs. Jane, and I all stepped back. I could feel my heart rate spike and I gripped the doorknob, hoping that this was just another Hallucination. It turned out that this police officer was not in my imagination however, as both Skylar and her mom said at the same time, “What on Earth have you done?”
Before Mr. Mark could respond, the police officer stepped forward. “He did the right thing.”
“Robin, run!” Skylar whispered urgently in my ear. I bit the inside of my cheek nervously. I’d already run from the police before. Would it be a good idea to do it again? Especially because the fact that I don’t want them to catch me probably indicated that I’m guilty. Maybe it would be better to let them catch me? Then at least I could better explain that I didn’t do it. “Robin!” Skylar said again.
I stood as still as a statue even when the police officer walked over towards me. Frozen solid, weighing my options. “Robin Fisher, you’re under arrest.”
Before I could even decide what to do, Uncle Ben burst through the door. He grabbed my arm and pulled me through the door. “Ack!” I yelped, caught off guard. Once we were out of the house I asked. “What are we doing?!”
“We’re getting out of here!” He said.
“The police think I murdered someone Uncle Ben! They’re just going to look for me harder now!”
“That man wasn’t with the police, Robin.”
“What? Who else would he be with?”
“Monarch.”
“He’s working with Monarch?” I repeated, stopping to catch my breath.
“Robin, we can’t stop now.”
“Why not?” I gasped, “They’ve been hunting me for weeks, it’s not going to get any worse now!”
“No,” Uncle Ben shook his head, “The hunt is just beginning.”
