Chapter 1
This is the part where I introduce myself. I tell you my backstory and I tell you what makes my life so exciting. I tell you why my family is so special, and probably more important, why I’m so special. What sets me apart from the crowd. And that’s the easy part. I’m a perfectly normal girl with a normal family. Pretty simple, right? Well here’s where things get tricky.
My name is Robin. That’s my real name anyway. Robin Fisher. Yes, like the bird. Yes, like Robinhood. I’ve heard it all, but seriously, it’s not such an uncommon name. But right now we don’t need to worry about my real name. Right now you just need to know me as Olivia Reed. That’ll make things easier for both of us, not to mention less dangerous.
Anyway, I was at my house like a normal person, because as I said, I am a normal person. I was preparing for school the next day. It would be my very first day of middle school. It was getting late and I knew I should have gotten in bed. It was my parents' anniversary, and I had promised them I’d be in bed by 9:30. They didn’t tell me when they’d be back, but I had assumed it would be probably after I was asleep. I wasn’t stressed about school like most people would have been though. I was really excited. Unlike most people I actually enjoy school.
Once I had double-checked that I had everything I needed for the day tomorrow I leaned back into the pillows of my bed and stared at the ceiling. My backpack was tucked in the corner of my room, next to my fluffy blue bean bag chair. I felt the cool breeze blowing through my open window. But my peace and quiet was shattered when I heard a loud bang on the door.
I sat up abruptly on my bed, a bad feeling rising in my throat. I slowly stood up and began walking towards the front door. The banging continued more rapidly and meaningfully. As I got closer I could see the door shaking under the immense pressure it was being subjected to. And suddenly the door flew into my house and right towards me. I had ducked down hoping to avoid getting hit, but it didn’t work. The door flew into me and knocked me over.
I tried to sit up and saw three police officers scanning my house. My head throbbed, but I did my best to ignore it. When the policemen spotted me they started running over, and one of them had a gun aimed at me. I stood up warily and put my hands above my head.
“I think there’s been a mistake. I didn’t do anything,” I told them.
“Yeah right!” One of them scoffed, “Didn’t do anything!”
“What do you mean?”
“You’re under arrest for the murder of Henry Dales” My mouth immediately became dry and fell open. One of them was still pointing a gun at me while another came closer to me holding handcuffs and issuing my rights, but I had hardly noticed him. I was paying more attention to the other one who was fidgeting nervously. His face, unlike the others, was serious and sad, and it only became more concerned when he caught me staring at him.
Before I had time to really think about this, however, the policeman trying to handcuff me got too close and I bolted. I retraced my steps through the kitchen and back into my room. I grabbed a jacket from off my chair and my backpack that was perfectly packed for school the next day. Then I jumped out of the window.
Okay, I made that sound a little more dramatic than it was, really my house is only one story, so I couldn’t actually jump. It was more like a sped-up climb and hop over the windowsill. Although not gonna lie, it was very exciting at the time. I didn’t really have time to make a plan. My only plan then was to escape.
And I did. I escaped to my best friend Mika’s house where I’m about to look like a complete fool. This is probably one of the last times I will ever come to this house because they’re moving to Kansas. I’m really going to miss them, but that’s another reason I’m looking forward to middle school. Maybe I’ll be able to make some new friends.
I walk up without even thinking of what to say. I ring the doorbell and wait for someone to answer. Luckily it’s Mika’s dad. One thing I have always liked about Mika’s dad is that he doesn’t ask annoying questions such as What are you doing here this late at night? Instead, he welcomes me with a hearty hug and lets me inside.
“Hey, kiddo!” He says wrapping me in his big warm arms.
“Hello!” I reply as happily as I can.
“Go on in,” he tells me, “Mika’s upstairs.” I thank him and rush up the stairs still hauling my backpack and jacket.
“Robie?” Mika asks, obviously confused. I smile sheepishly and sit down beside her on her bed. “What’s wrong?” she asks me, “You look like you just saw a ghost!”
“I just watched a scary movie,” I replied. And actually, if you ask me this wasn’t such a lie. It feels like I did just watch a movie. A very scary movie.
“And you just decided to run all the way over here?”
“It’s a very nice evening,” I protest.
“Robin. It's 10:00.” She has a good point. “Where are your parents?”
“They went out to dinner. I just texted them. They said I could sleepover.” Mika still looks extremely doubtful, but she shrugs.
“I’m happy your here anyway,” she says.
I smile, “Me too.”
