Snapes before me
Chapter 2
Of course, I had not been the first Snape to have been sent to Hogwarts and endure the process of being sorted. I was in fact the third. The first had been my mother, Severina Snape. She started Hogwarts in 1968. I obviously cannot give such an exacting account as my own sorting however she was sent her letter by OWL. She was, in no doubt, a half-blood witch. She took the train to Hogwarts, leaving from Platform 9 ¾ It was the hardest thing she had to do, leaving her little brother alone with their parents and it was some time before they managed to get to grips with their new lifestyle.
My uncle told me not to fight the sorting hat. It has a way of finding you. Whatever the weather, whatever your motives. She was intelligent, kind and brave. Others of her family had been sorted into Slytherin, so I am told, but I can’t be sure. My grandparents had a habit of fabricating whatever truth they wanted in order to get themselves into the best situation. I was not brought up with the highest regard for them. In truth I don’t recall being told much other than “You don’t need to know”. It caused a disgrace when my mother was sorted into GRYFFINDOR. She was worried that her parents would get angry and she wouldn’t be there to shield her brother from any abuse that he may get from them. It was a very strange experience for her as she came from a poor upbringing and was suddenly surrounded by many richer people.
The other was my uncle Severus Snape. The sorting hat must have had the most terribly difficult time sorting him. He was the bravest, most loving, most loyal man that I ever had the pleasure of being related to, and yet he was cunning and intelligent. He knew how to side step any angle. Like his sister he boarded the train at platform 9 ¾ he immediately changed his clothes and commenced his journey at Hogwarts in 1971 along with Lily Evans who came from the same town as them. I often wonder if they all sat together Severus, Severina and Lily. All from Cokeworth.
Severina, being older was not a first year and sat on the Gryffindor table with her friends ready to watch her brother get sorted. Lily was sorted into Gryffindor and I can imagine she was really happy to welcome her to the table along with Remus Lupin and James Potter. When it came time to get Severus sorted, he was put into SLYTHERIN. Can I say that this was the wrong decision? Perhaps. But there is a saying. “Being a Gryffindor doesn’t prove bravery, being a Slytherin doesn’t prove stealth. Being a Hufflepuff doesn’t prove kindness and being a Ravenclaw doesn’t prove wealth.” Basically, your sorting is an inspiration to aspire to. You have the potential to be anything.
