Chapter 4
“I told you she was never to have any contact with him!” Carla yells as Sarah desperately tries to calm her sister down. She hoped Savannah couldn't hear any of this in the kitchen from the room she had undoubtedly been locked away in after she came home. She fights for the right words, but finds none other than what she knows will fuel Carla even further.
“Carla, I only wanted to give her the chance, as every child should. She doesn’t even know who he is! He has the right to know her as much as you do!" Sarah argues, pleading with her sister to give it a chance. Instead, Sarah observes Carla’s unresolved anger flaring even more as she retorts back.
“Him?! Deserves the chance?! I’ve torn out 17 years of my life to provide for Savannah when I could have easily given up that responsibility at a clinic!"
Sarah cringes at the words, but tries to lay a hand on her sister's shoulder once more.
Carla only swats it away as she continues, "But I didn't and HE did. He left me without a single thought and now wants to insert himself into her life?!” Carla’s knuckles turn white as her clench on the table edge grows tighter.
Sarah knows there is no solution to controlling her sister’s bursts of anger, so she gets right to the point.
“No, Carla, he knows that would be wrong of him. He has realized what he did was wrong and has bore that guilt all this time as well. He simply wants to make things right before…” Sara’s words trail off as her mind pauses, trying to substitute the phrase for something lighter. But there is none, only the truth.
“He’s dying, Carla.”
