Chapter 2
It was dinner time at Camp Soleil. Aria ate with her cabin-mates, as always, laughing and talking. They sat outdoors at big, wooden tables, near the campfire.. After coming to camp, she realized it wasn’t as bad as she thought. In fact, it was one of the most fun experiences ever! Aria had made friends, learned a lot of things, and enjoyed doing a lot of activities such as roasting marshmallows at the campfire and telling spooky stories, swimming and canoeing in the lake, and hiking in the forest that surrounded the camp.
That night after dinner, they sat down near the campfire to tell some stories. But today was special. One of the older girls, who had been going to the camp every summer, told the legend of the Midnight spirit.
“Long ago, before the area was even settled, a little girl and her father lived in this forest, right where we’re standing right now.” The girl started, then continued, “One night, the girl got up and left the small house for reasons nobody could imagine. People still have no idea. But anyways, she got lost in the woods, and didn’t survive. Nobody found her, and it’s been so long that she has to be dead.”
The storyteller took a deep breath as Aria sat forward, keen to hear the rest, almost burning her marshmallow in the process.
“They say that every summer, on the exact day she got lost, her spirit would tap three times on a cabin window at midnight, as if she was trying to get back in. Sometimes people say they saw a little girl or heard a scream when they heard the taps. But of course it's just a legend, nothing to worry about.”
The narrator smiled and got up. “Lights out girls!” She called as Aria went back to her cabin, her mind racing after hearing that legend. Aria was slightly unnerved, but she managed to convince herself to sleep.
Aria woke up with a start. She looked at the clock besides her. It was midnight. She settled back into her bunk, but then her eyes widened.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
