Lesson 8: Using Runes In Spells and Enchantments

Chapter 8
~Runes In Enchantments and Spells

-not to be taken lightly
-creating/charging runes is time consuming
-most daily life spells do not require runes
-Intense combat may call for runic assistance, such as the Battle of Hogwarts (Thurisaz)
-considered subtler and older form of magic
-there is wand movement with almost every verbal spell
-similar to creating/activating runes over objects
-physically carving the rune and saying the incantation at the same time won't work

~Activating Runes and Rune Sets

-Activation Charm
Incantation: Venenate
Pronunciation: VEH-neh-nayt
Wand Movement: clockwise circle around the entire design with a stabbing motion towards center
Concentration: High (desired meanings of each rune must be help firmly in place, as well as how they relate to each other)
Willpower: Low (though more can be applied, many find it difficult after expending so much energy on concentration)

-The Deactivation Charm
Incantation: Devenenate
Pronunciation: deh-VEH-neh-nayt
Wand Movement: counterclockwise circle around the entire design with a pulling motion away from center
Concentration: Moderate (must direct focus towards all magical runes, or unpredictable effects will remain. This is often how a red glow occurs)
Willpower: Low

-verify that your spell worked using the Enchantment Revealing Charm (L1).
-deactivate runes which will no longer be used to prevent people from getting hurt
-Enchantment Revealing Charm has 4 results:
No result: not active
Amber or Bronze Glow: successfully activated
Red Glow: the runes are activated; however, there is something wrong with the rune or rune set
Pale Blue Glow: there is some form of enchantment or spell on the runes, although it is not clear what it is.

-If there is no amber or bronze glow, proceed with caution and consult an expert.

~Runic Spells

-one of the most common uses for runic magic is amulets or other jewelry/coins

-Kragehul I

-lance fragment found in Denmark
-between 200 and 475 CE
-Inscripted with: ek erilaz āsugīsalas muha haite, gagaga [ginu gahellija, hagala wiju bi gaize](?)
-First part: “I, magician/runemaster of Āsugīsalaz, am called Muha, ga-ga-ga.” (ga-ga-ga is a war cry of some sort)
-Second part: Unconfirmed
-most recent part translated in 2006 by Dr. Mindy MacLeod and Dr. Bernard Mees of Melbourne, Australia
-2nd part is thought to say "[ga-ga-ga] I yell resoundingly, hail I dedicate in the spear.”
-some think there is some dedication to Odin, or spell relating to luck

-The Lindholm Amulet

-bone piece found in Sweden
-dates back to between 2nd and 4th centuries
-Inscriptions: "ekerilazsa[w]ilagazhateka:
aaaaaaaazzznn[n]bmuttt:alu:"

-First part: “I am a magician/runemaster, I am called Sawilagaz,” (Sawilagaz- sun, or the one of the sun)
-Second part: string of magic runes ending in "ALU" (Ansuz, Laguz, Uruz)
-ALU thought to be invocation of Tiwaz (the god)
-always have intent clear in mind or you could get an undesired/unexpected effect

~Runes with Verbal Charms

-runes can be used with verbal spells to enhance/modify effects
-usually done when charming objects
-Ex: you could use Wunjo (connoting to joy) to strengthen or enhance spells that require happiness, like the Patronus Charm or Cheering Charm

~Runes with Potions

-less common now
-don't inscribe runes directly onto the cauldron
-could inscribe/activate onto phials

~Vocabulary

-Metonym: a word, name, or expression used as a substitute for something else with which it is closely associated. Example: "tongue" used as an expression to mean "language" or how delicate porcelain from China came to be called "china".

~Assignments

-Quiz
-Essay (EC)
-Study for final next week
