Lesson 7: A Closer Look At Translation
Chapter 7
~General notes on translating runes as ideograms
-depends on experience of translator
-always look for the easier - phonetic translation - first
-Keep Schreiber's corrections in mind
~Interpreting Runes – Example One
- ᚻᛖᛚXᚫ ᚱ ᚾᛟᚱᛖXᚱ
-Latin alphabet translation: HELENA R NOREGR
-The "R" in the middle, "Raido" also means "ride/journey", so this would mean, "Helena traveled to Norway."
~Interpreting Runes – Example Two
-when there are only a couple runes and they don't make sense phonetically, most often they are referring to their meanings.
-also consider the relationships and context
-S ᛞ
-Phonetically - "SD", which doesn't make sense
-Rune 1 - Sowilo "Sun", Rune 2 - Dagaz "Day"
-"Sun Day", or "Sunday"
-If enscribed in the right context, it makes sense
-if enscribed onto a dagger or weapon, "Sowilo" also has several other meanings: "willpower", "daylight", "victory", "power". In a "weapons" context, "victory" and "power" make most sense for Sowilo.
-Dagaz can also mean breakthrough, clarity of direction, and balance
-In a war setting, this would mean victory and power and breakthrough and clarity of direction
-3 levels: First as code symbols for specific sounds, then as symbols for their basic mundane meaning, and finally we have looked at their deeper meaning according to Schreiber’s corrections.
-Now consider interpreting at different levels
-For example, Sowilo could literally mean 'Sun", but Dagaz could have deeper meaning, such as "breakthrough". This would translate to "Sun breakthrough" or "sunrise"
-Alternatively, Dagaz could mean "day" and Sowilo could carry one of its other meanings.
~Meanings of Runes In Spellwork
-Principle of Sympathy: States that like attracts like, or symbols/objects that represent the target will help make the magic work.
-Principle of Correspondence: "As above, so below"
~Vocabulary
-Level of translation: the type of meaning chosen to translate a rune (sound, mundane, Schreiber).
-Principle of Sympathy: “like attracts like”
-Principle of Correspondence: “as above, so below”
